BEYMA FD-2XA: passive FD-series crossover rated at 600 W AES
The BEYMA FD-2XA is a ready-built passive crossover from Beyma's FD series. Inside a loudspeaker it splits the amplifier signal between the drivers: low frequencies go to the woofer, highs to the tweeter or compression driver. Unlike a hand-soldered network it arrives as a complete assembly with coils, capacitors and resistors on a carrier board, tuned to Beyma chassis from the PA range.
A rating of 600 W AES puts it in sound-reinforcement territory rather than hi-fi. The weight of 1 kg hints at components with real cross-section: coils built for high currents have mass, and low-pass capacitors in a PA network are not miniature parts. That is exactly why a manufacturer's series crossover is often the better choice over an improvised build when the system has to play loud for hours.
Use and enclosure
The FD-2XA makes sense wherever you run Beyma drivers in a passive cabinet and do not want a DSP or active operation with a multichannel amplifier: classic full-range tops, stage monitors, installed speakers. The board sits inside the enclosure, usually on the rear panel or the floor, with enough distance to magnet systems so stray fields do not affect the coils. In a vented box, keep it out of the port's airflow.
Before buying, check which driver combination Beyma intends for this network: crossover frequency, impedance of each leg and any level padding for the tweeter are calculated for specific drivers. If the combination matches, you save measurement time and component sourcing. If it does not, a custom design beats a network that happens to be roughly right. 42.audio helps you match it to the right Beyma drivers from the range.
What to look out for
- Rated 600 W AES: sized for PA cabinets, crossover and drivers must match
- 1 kg: bolt it to the cabinet, do not rely on adhesive alone
- Keep distance from magnets and ports, coils react to stray fields
- Driver impedance must match the design, otherwise the crossover point shifts
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the FD-2XA with any drivers?
No. A passive network is calculated for the impedance and sensitivity of specific drivers. With other units, crossover point and level balance shift. Ask about the intended Beyma combination before you plan the build.
Is 600 W AES enough for my amplifier?
The figure describes what the network tolerates continuously, not your amplifier's output. What matters is the power rating of the connected drivers; the crossover should at least match the system rating. Clipping distortion stresses the high-frequency leg far more than a clean signal.
Can I skip the crossover when bi-amping?
Yes. If you split the signal actively with a DSP and one amplifier channel per way, the passive network is not needed. The FD-2XA is designed for passive operation from a single amplifier channel.
At 42.audio you get the BEYMA FD-2XA with all key data in the driver database. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas Beyma.
