Beyma SG-6.1: lightweight SG-series waveguide at 0.32 kg

At 0.32 kg, the SG-6.1 is the lightest waveguide of Beyma's SG series in the 42.audio range. The low weight makes it attractive for designs where every gram counts: portable cabinets, monitors, columns or projects where the baffle should not need reinforcing for a heavy cast horn.

The task remains the same as with any waveguide: guide the sound of a compression driver from throat to mouth with a smooth contour so the dispersion stays stable over a wide frequency range and the transition to the baffle creates no edges that cause diffraction. A light build does mean, however, that the walls have less mass; whether and how much they vibrate depends on material and shape stiffness. In practice, remaining resonances are easily tamed with a damping sheet on the rear.

Use and enclosure

The SG-6.1 suits two-way loudspeakers in which a Beyma compression driver handles the treble above a mid-woofer, especially where weight and space are limited. Candidates are compact PA cabinets, stage monitors, speech reinforcement in conference and seminar rooms, or a home project with horn-loaded treble that wants the benefit of controlled dispersion without building a heavy front.

The driver is chosen from the Beyma compression driver category at 42.audio: the driver's horn fitting and bolt pattern must match the throat of the SG-6.1. The usual rules for horn systems apply to the crossover: crossover well above the waveguide's lower limit and above the driver's resonance, steep slope, level matching to the mid-woofer with an attenuator or DSP.
