Beyma SMC-8060/N: 1" compression driver with a 1.75" voice coil and 50 W AES
The Beyma SMC-8060/N is a compression driver with a 1" horn exit from Beyma's SMC series. It works from 800 Hz to 18,000 Hz, handles 50 W AES and has a nominal impedance of 8 Ω. That makes it an HF driver for two-way PA cabinets, stage monitors and smaller horn systems where a 1" throat is sufficient but the driver needs to reach lower than a pure super tweeter would.
Within the 1" class, the 1.75" voice coil stands out. A larger coil diameter means more diaphragm area behind the phase plug and more thermal headroom, which is exactly why the lower frequency limit sits at 800 Hz, well below what drivers with a small coil can manage. The motor delivers a BL of 8.5 Tm and the resonance frequency Fs is 800 Hz. At 1.5 kg and 122 mm mounting depth the SMC-8060/N is not a lightweight but a solidly built driver for permanent installation.
Use and enclosure
The 1" throat fits any 1" horn with the same mounting style. A horn with a sufficiently large mouth is mandatory if you really want to load the driver down towards 800 Hz, because a horn that is too small stops loading there and the diaphragm runs unrestrained.
The crossover frequency should be well above 800 Hz, at least about an octave above Fs, and the high-pass should be steep (12 dB/oct is not enough here, 24 dB/oct makes sense). The closer you get to 800 Hz, the less of the 50 W AES you can use thermally and mechanically. A limiter in the HF channel is strongly recommended for rental and stage use.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω nominal impedance: runs on any common power amp channel, including active DSP setups with a high-pass.
- 50 W AES power handling: with low crossover points near 800 Hz, protect with a steep filter and a limiter.
- Allow 122 mm mounting depth behind the horn, plus room for cable and terminals.
- 1.5 kg weight: make the horn flange and baffle sufficiently stiff.
- Fs of 800 Hz coincides with the lower frequency limit; never run it below.

Which cabinets is the SMC-8060/N suited for?
Two-way PA cabinets and monitors with a large mid-woofer where the HF driver has to take over lower than usual. The 1.75" voice coil gives you the reserve for that. For pure super-tweeter duty the driver is oversized.

Well above 800 Hz, because both the lower frequency limit and Fs sit there. With a steep crossover (24 dB/oct) and a horn that loads down into that range you get the most out of the driver. With shallow filters, go higher.
