Beyma T-25M: dome tweeter with 80 W AES for PA cabinets and monitors
Compression drivers dominate professional treble, but not every cabinet wants a horn: where wide, even dispersion and an unobtrusive character matter more than maximum efficiency, a robust dome tweeter is the better fit. The Beyma T-25M from the T series is built for that: 80 W AES continuous power handling, 5 Ω nominal impedance, resonance frequency 1,500 Hz.
Together with the T-25S, the T-25M is one of the two higher-rated domes in the T series at 42.audio; both share the same electrical data. The 80 W AES figure is measured with a noise signal to the AES method and is therefore directly comparable with compression driver ratings, not with the soft music-power figures from the hi-fi shelf. The resonance at 1,500 Hz indicates a suspension with enough compliance for the crossover frequencies common in two-way cabinets with mid-woofers – provided the filter keeps the dome away from its resonance.
Use and enclosure
Applications are two-way PA cabinets, stage monitors, installation speakers and studio monitors where the beaming of a horn is unwanted. In a monitor, for example, the wide dispersion of the dome means the sound barely changes as you move your head; in a small reinforcement box it covers a wide angle without you having to aim a horn.
Practical design: crossover at least an octave above resonance, so clearly above 1,500 Hz, with 12 or better 24 dB per octave. The steeper and higher you cross, the more of the 80 W AES you can actually use. The 5 Ω is the decisive value when calculating the network; series resistors used to pad the tweeter down to a more sensitive mid-woofer change the effective impedance and belong in the calculation. If you run the system actively with a DSP that issue disappears, but you then need a high-pass with a clean slope directly ahead of the power amp.
What to look out for
- 80 W AES – rated like a compression driver, but with the dispersion of a dome
- 5 Ω nominal impedance: match the crossover and any padding resistors to it
- Fs 1,500 Hz – set the high-pass at least an octave higher
- No horn, no horn equalisation, uncritical mounting in the baffle
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the T-25M and the T-25S?
Power handling, impedance and resonance frequency are identical on both: 80 W AES, 5 Ω, 1,500 Hz. The differences are in the execution; compare both product pages and choose according to mounting situation and the look you want.
Is a hi-fi amplifier enough for the T-25M?
Yes, as long as it drives 5 Ω cleanly. You do not have to exhaust the 80 W AES – the figure describes what the tweeter tolerates, not what it needs. In passive systems the power reaching the tweeter is far below the total anyway.
Can I pair the T-25M with a more sensitive mid-woofer?
Yes, the tweeter is then padded down in the crossover, usually with an L-pad. Calculate the pad with the 5 Ω nominal impedance and verify the result by measurement; the driver database at 42.audio provides the mid-woofer's parameters for that.
At 42.audio you get the BEYMA T-25M with all key data in the driver database. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas Beyma.
