Beyma T-25S: 80 W AES dome tweeter at 5 Ω for two-way cabinets without a horn

80 W AES from a dome – that is the headline figure of the Beyma T-25S, a tweeter from the T series for applications where a compression driver on a horn is not the right tool. With 5 Ω nominal impedance and a resonance frequency of 1,500 Hz it is tailored to two-way systems in which the tweeter takes over from the presence region upwards and is expected to radiate widely.

What a dome brings to PA: the diaphragm radiates directly into the room, without a phase plug and without horn loading. That costs efficiency compared with a compression driver, but gives dispersion that narrows evenly with frequency instead of being forced into a fixed horn pattern. Sonically that means less colouration and off-axis behaviour that blends cleanly with a mid-woofer. The AES rating is measured with a noise signal and describes true continuous loading, not a brief peak.

Use and enclosure

The T-25S suits compact reinforcement cabinets, monitors, installation speakers and studio monitors with mid-woofers whose beaming is not yet too pronounced at the crossover. Place the crossover at least an octave above 1,500 Hz, using a filter of 12 or 24 dB per octave; the steeper high-pass keeps the dome further from resonance and turns more of the 80 W AES into usable headroom.

Two points for the build: first, the 5 Ω nominal impedance sets the component values of the crossover – a network calculated for another driver cannot simply be carried over. Second, mount the tweeter as close to the mid-woofer as possible so the vertical pattern does not fall apart in the transition. A helpful reference for the crossover calculation is the driver database at 42.audio.

What to look out for

  • 80 W AES continuous power handling, measured with a noise signal
  • 5 Ω – design crossover components and amplifier load for it
  • Resonance 1,500 Hz: high-pass at least an octave above
  • Direct radiator: wide dispersion, no horn colouration, no horn equalisation

Frequently asked questions

T-25S or T-25M – what speaks for which?

Electrically both are the same: 80 W AES, 5 Ω, resonance 1,500 Hz. Decide by the version that fits your mounting and your look; sonically and in the crossover design you treat both identically.

Which power amp do I need for the T-25S?

One that drives 5 Ω stably – no issue for PA amplifiers rated for 4 Ω, and worth a look at the spec sheet with hi-fi amplifiers. The power does not need to be 80 W; what matters is a clean, non-clipping signal, since clipping kills tweeters faster than power does.

Why is the impedance 5 Ω rather than the usual values?

Beyma designs the voice coil in this series for 5 Ω. That is uncritical for the amplifier, but it requires you to calculate the crossover with this value and to keep an eye on the total load when several tweeters are wired in parallel.
