Beyma TPL-150/Black: AMT driver with 99 dB and 80 W AES from 1,000 Hz

With the TPL series, Beyma builds air-motion transformers for use well beyond the living room. The TPL-150/Black is the black-finished version of the TPL-150 without a horn attachment: 80 W AES power handling, 99 dB sensitivity and a working range from 1,000 Hz to 23,000 Hz. That places it between hi-fi AMTs with dome-like efficiency and compression drivers: loud enough for monitors and small PA, clean enough for studio and demanding hi-fi.

The motor works like every AMT. A pleated plastic foil with conductor tracks stands in the magnetic gap, the folds open and close, and air is expelled at a multiple of the foil velocity. The large diaphragm area spreads the electrical and thermal load, which makes the 80 W AES plausible, and the low moving mass provides the transient behaviour AMTs are valued for. Without a horn, dispersion stays wide; in return, sensitivity is lower than on the horn-loaded TPL-150/H.

Use and enclosure

The TPL-150/Black is meant as the tweeter in two-way and three-way systems with midranges or mid-woofers up to roughly 99 dB sensitivity. Cross it well above the 1,000 Hz lower limit and use a high-pass of at least 12 dB/oct.; at high levels or with a tight crossover, 24 dB/oct. is the better choice. The 80 W AES rating applies to filtered signal, because an AMT does not forgive low-frequency content with large excursion.

Install it upright, since the tall diaphragm narrows vertical dispersion and radiates wide horizontally. For studio monitors that is an advantage, as reflections from desk and ceiling are reduced. In passive crossovers, match the level to less sensitive woofers with a voltage divider; in active systems a small channel with a clean filter is all it needs. If you want a waveguide for the TPL-150/Black, Beyma models are listed at 42.audio under the brand's Horns & Waveguides category. The driver database helps compare it with the other TPL versions.

What to look out for

  • 99 dB sensitivity: matches PA mid-woofers; hi-fi drivers need a level pad.
  • Lower limit 1,000 Hz: cross well above it, high-pass at least 12 dB/oct.
  • 80 W AES only for filtered signal above the crossover.
  • No horn: wide horizontal dispersion, mount it upright.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the TPL-150/Black and the TPL-150/H?

The /H carries a horn attachment, which raises sensitivity and lets it start lower. The /Black runs without a horn, radiates wider and delivers 99 dB from 1,000 Hz. For wide dispersion and studio use the /Black is the obvious choice; for output and a low crossover, the /H.

Which amplifier suits the TPL-150/Black?

Any stable amplifier with a clean high-pass in front of it. 80 W AES at 99 dB is very loud; what counts is not the power but making sure no low frequencies reach the driver.

Is the TPL-150/Black suitable for studio monitors?

Yes, that is exactly where it shines: even horizontal dispersion, high power handling and low distortion at working levels. Cross it above 1,000 Hz and mount it upright at ear height.
