Mundorf AMTU160W1.1-R: large AMT with faceplate, 4 Ω, usable from 1,500 Hz

If you want the large AMT from Mundorf's U series without routing your own bezel, the AMTU160W1.1-R is the one. The faceplate is factory-fitted and the overall size is 61 x 181 x 48 mm. Underneath sits the same air-motion transformer as in the base model: 4 Ω, 93 dB sensitivity at 2.83 V and 1 m, usable from 1,500 Hz with 12 dB/oct., response up to 28 kHz, neodymium motor.

The foil of an AMT is pleated and carries conductor tracks that lie in the magnetic field. When current flows, adjacent folds pull together or open up, and the air between them is expelled much faster than the foil itself moves. In this 181 mm tall version the work is spread over many folds, which keeps excursion per fold small and allows use from 1,500 Hz. The faceplate not only eases mounting, it also provides a defined transition to the baffle, which improves measurability and repeatability of the build.

Use and enclosure

The AMTU160W1.1-R is the tweeter for two-way designs with larger mid-woofers and for three-way systems in which the midrange should hand over as early as 1,500 Hz. At that crossover the high-pass needs at least 12 dB/oct.; 24 dB/oct. is advisable at high levels and lets you stay close to the lower limit. Crossing higher gains power handling but wastes the advantage of the large diaphragm.

Installation: rout the cut-out and, if desired, a recess for the faceplate so that it sits flush with the baffle. Mount it upright at ear height, since the tall foil narrows vertical dispersion. The 4 Ω rating calls for an amplifier that drives this load continuously and a crossover calculated for 4 Ω; 2.83 V into 4 Ω is 2 W, which should be kept in mind when comparing sensitivity with higher-impedance drivers. Datasheet PDF, driver database and enclosure calculator are available at 42.audio.

What to look out for

  • Faceplate, overall size 61 x 181 x 48 mm: direct mounting in the baffle cut-out.
  • 4 Ω: amplifier must be 4 Ω capable, calculate the crossover accordingly.
  • 93 dB at 2.83 V/1 m, which is 2 W into 4 Ω.
  • Crossover from 1,500 Hz with at least 12 dB/oct.
  • Tall diaphragm: narrow vertical dispersion, mount at ear height and upright.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference from the AMTU160W1.1 without R?

Only the faceplate. Driver, impedance, sensitivity and working range are identical. The R version measures 61 x 181 x 48 mm and is meant for direct mounting; the version without faceplate is for custom bezels.

Which amplifier suits the AMTU160W1.1-R?

An amplifier that drives 4 Ω continuously and stably. Power is secondary, because above 1,500 Hz the AMT sees only a fraction of the programme power; low noise and a clean high-pass matter more.

Is the AMTU160W1.1-R suitable for floorstanders with a large mid-woofer?

Yes, the low crossover from 1,500 Hz is exactly for that. Large mid-woofers beam in the upper midrange, and the AMT takes over early enough before that becomes audible. The enclosure calculator at 42.audio helps with the bass section.
