18Sound 10NDA610: pure 10" neodymium midrange with 103 dB and 96 mm mounting depth

The 18Sound 10NDA610 is a 10" midrange with no bass ambitions: Fs 89 Hz, Vas 18 l, Xmax 2.5 mm – the motor is tailored to the range between 100 and 6,100 Hz, not to excursion. In return you get 103 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω, a 3" voice coil rated at 400 W AES and a neodymium magnet that keeps the whole driver at 3.5 kg. At 96 mm mounting depth it is also shallower than most 10" drivers with a comparable motor.

The voice-coil inductance of 0.06 mH stands out. Such a low value means the impedance stays almost resistive far into the upper mids and the cone follows the signal without the usual inductive roll-off – exactly what a midrange needs when it has to hand over cleanly to a compression driver. Together with BL 20.3 Tm at 30 g moving mass this gives a driver with very high acceleration and an EBP of 371.

Use and enclosure

The sensible installation is a sealed midrange chamber. As a guideline about 2.1 l is enough for a corner frequency around 274 Hz; a bass-reflex chamber (roughly 4 l, tuned to 140 Hz, f3 around 181 Hz) gains little with a pure midrange because the high-pass sits above it anyway. Set the crossover to the bass well above the lower limit of 100 Hz – with 2.5 mm Xmax every bit of low-mid content belongs in another driver. The enclosure calculator at 42.audio is there for the exact chamber tuning.

Upwards the usable range reaches 6,100 Hz, which leaves room for the handover to a 1" or 2" driver and lets you choose the crossover frequency according to the horn. Typical applications: three-way tops and midrange horns (the EBP of 371 explicitly favours horn loading), line-array modules and stage monitors where weight and depth are tight.

What to look out for

  • Xmax 2.5 mm: pure midrange, a high-pass well above 100 Hz is mandatory.
  • 103 dB at 8 Ω: louder than almost any woofer, plan level matching in the crossover.
  • Le 0.06 mH: almost resistive impedance in the usable range, easy for passive crossovers.
  • 3.5 kg and 96 mm mounting depth: neodymium, light and shallow.
  • 3" coil, 400 W AES: thermally designed for professional continuous duty.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 10NDA610 also suitable as a mid-woofer in a two-way box?

No. With Fs 89 Hz and Xmax 2.5 mm it lacks excursion and extension; it is a midrange for three-way systems. For a two-way box take a driver with more excursion, such as the 10M600 or a dedicated mid-woofer.

What enclosure does the 10NDA610 need?

A sealed midrange chamber of about 2.1 l (guideline, corner frequency 274 Hz) is enough. Alternatively a midrange horn: the low Qts of 0.23 and the high EBP suit that. A bass-reflex chamber is not worth it.

What sets it apart from the 10M600?

The 10M600 has ferrite, Fs 70 Hz, Vas 25.6 l and considerably more excursion, so it can work from the low mids upwards. The 10NDA610 is lighter, shallower, 1 dB louder and cleaner in the upper mids thanks to 0.06 mH – but strictly a midrange.

18Sound 10NDA610: manufacturer, spellings and classification

18Sound, 18 Sound and Eighteensound all refer to the same manufacturer: Eighteen Sound S.r.l. of Reggio Emilia, Italy. The 10NDA610 is a 10-inch midrange driver with neodymium magnet from the NDA series, available from 42.audio, 18Sound dealer in Germany, with datasheet and full specifications in the driver database.

At 42.audio you get the 18SOUND 10NDA610 with datasheet PDF, all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas 18Sound.
