18Sound 10NTLW2000: 10" dual-gap mid-woofer with 7.4 mm Xmax and Fs 50 Hz

A midrange with 7.4 mm Xmax is unusual, and that is exactly what defines the 18Sound 10NTLW2000. The dual-gap motor of the NTL series – two 2" voice coils in two air gaps of a neodymium magnet system – is designed for excursion here: Fs 50 Hz, Vas 38 l, Qts 0.26 and BL 16.7 Tm at 47 g moving mass. The usable range therefore spans 50 to 3,000 Hz, from the low mids up to the point where a compression driver can take over.

The design also explains the 97 dB sensitivity: more mass and more excursion cost efficiency compared with pure midranges, but in return the 10NTLW2000 works cleanly in the low mids where a 10" midrange with 2 or 3 mm Xmax would long be at its limit. 350 W AES, 8 Ω and Re 5.2 Ω suit a normal amplifier channel; the 0.74 mH inductance is moderate for two coils.

Use and enclosure

For bass-reflex the guideline is 12 l tuned to 71 Hz, lower cutoff around 86 Hz – a compact volume for a 10" mid-woofer running in a two-way box with subwoofer or as the low-mid/midrange section of a three-way system. Sealed it is about 5.9 l with a 136 Hz corner frequency, which works as a midrange chamber when the high-pass sits well above 50 Hz. The EBP of 185 shows: reflex tuning uses the excursion, sealed boxes deliver no extension. Fine tuning is what the enclosure calculator at 42.audio is for.

The upper limit of 3,000 Hz sets the crossover to the treble: it has to be below that, which in practice means a 1" or 2" compression driver on a horn large enough to still load at that frequency. At 141 mm mounting depth the 10NTLW2000 is not a shallow driver – the dual-gap construction needs space behind the baffle.

What to look out for

  • Xmax 7.4 mm: real low-mid capability, still set the high-pass above 50 Hz.
  • 97 dB at 8 Ω: less efficiency than pure midranges, but bandwidth downwards.
  • Upper limit 3,000 Hz: cross to the tweeter below that, choose the horn accordingly large.
  • 141 mm mounting depth: the dual-gap motor is deep.
  • 350 W AES on a 2x2" coil: heat is spread over two windings.

Frequently asked questions

Two-way box or three-way system – where does the 10NTLW2000 fit better?

Both. As the mid-woofer of a two-way box you use the bass-reflex volume around 12 l with a subwoofer below; in a three-way system it covers low mids and midrange up to a crossover below 3,000 Hz.

How does it differ from the 10NW650?

The 10NW650 is classified as a woofer, tuned almost identically with Fs 51 Hz, Qts 0.27 and Vas 50 l, but needs more volume. The 10NTLW2000 has the dual-gap motor and with Vas 38 l is designed for smaller enclosures.

Which amplifier?

A channel around 350 W into 8 Ω uses the full power handling. Since the driver works down into the low mids with 7.4 mm Xmax, a high-pass with limiter matters more than headroom – sub-bass below the tuning frequency costs excursion without adding SPL.

At 42.audio you get the 18SOUND 10NTLW2000 with datasheet PDF, all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas 18Sound.
