18Sound 10NTLW3500: 10" neodymium woofer with 2x3.5" coil and 800 W AES
800 W AES from a 10" driver: the 18Sound 10NTLW3500 gets there through a double voice coil of 2x3.5" diameter inside a dual-gap neodymium motor. Two coil sections in two air gaps double the area through which heat is transferred to the magnet system and raise BL to 23.9 Tm. For a 10" driver that is a very strong motor, and it still weighs only 4.2 kg.
The NTLW series is designed for woofer/midrange duty in high-power tops and line arrays where thermal headroom matters more than the last dB of efficiency. 94 dB sensitivity is therefore not spectacular, but the combination of 800 W, Xmax 6.4 mm and 58 g moving mass yields a maximum level under continuous load that lighter drivers with small coils cannot sustain. Qts 0.45 at Fs 64 Hz is relatively high for a PA driver and makes the enclosure uncritical.
Use and enclosure
The vented guide value is 27 l with fb 55 Hz and f3 51 Hz. That lets a 10" top reach surprisingly low, with the nominal range starting at 60 Hz. If you run the 10NTLW3500 with a subwoofer, cross above that limit and gain excursion headroom for high levels in the kick-bass band. Sealed, the guide value is 12 l at fc 101 Hz, which suits midrange chambers in 3-way systems. The EBP of 139 points to vented as the main application.
The usable range ends at 3,500 Hz; the heavy double coil sets the limit there. That is no issue for a 1.4" compression driver on a horn from the 18Sound range, since you cross below that anyway. Note the mounting depth of 177 mm, considerably more than simple 10" drivers. The version at 42.audio is 16 Ω with Re 11.4 Ω; the driver is also made in 8 Ω. Why does the 10NTLW3500 only have 94 dB at 800 W?
The heavy 2x3.5" coil with 58 g Mms costs efficiency but buys thermal capacity. Under continuous load the level stays stable where lighter drivers go into compression. Maximum SPL is therefore high even though the sensitivity figure is not.
Which enclosure suits the 10NTLW3500?
A vented box of about 27 l tuned to 55 Hz as a guide value gives f3 around 51 Hz. For a midrange chamber a sealed volume of about 12 l is enough. Exact values come from the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.
How do I wire several 16 Ω 10NTLW3500 units?
