18Sound 12NCX910: 12" coax with 3"/3" voice coils, 99.5 dB and 450 W AES

99.5 dB sensitivity from a coaxial driver – the 18Sound 12NCX910 is the NCX-series model for applications where level and headroom come before compactness. Both ways use 3" voice coils: the 12" woofer as well as the compression driver with titanium diaphragm, which radiates through a conical 80° horn in the centre. A 3" HF coil means more diaphragm area and thermal capacity than the 2.4" drivers of the 750 models. A neodymium magnet drives it all; the unit weighs 6 kg at 210 mm mounting depth.

Power handling 450 W AES, 8 Ω, Fs 57 Hz, Qms 10, Qes 0.31, Qts 0.3, Vas 58 l, BL 18.1 Tm, Mms 53 g, Le 0.78 mH and an Xmax of 6.9 mm – that is the woofer side. The higher Xmax compared with the 750s gives the 12NCX910 noticeably more excursion headroom at low tuning, and the high Qms indicates a mechanically low-loss suspension. The recommended crossover is 1.5 kHz.

Use and enclosure

Where the 12NCX910 belongs: powerful stage monitors, full-range tops for medium-sized reinforcement, compact two-way systems in clubs and installations that are to get by with a single driver per cabinet. The point-source nature of the coaxial layout ensures that the transition at 1.5 kHz sounds the same at every angle – particularly in a monitor, where the listener rarely stands on axis, that is the real advantage.

Enclosure: the EBP of 184 points to bass reflex. As a guide from the Thiele-Small parameters you get around 27 l net tuned to 71 Hz with an f3 near 80 Hz. Sealed, about 13 l at fc 134 Hz is a reference, practically sensible only as a mid-high compartment above a subwoofer. Keep the 210 mm mounting depth in mind when planning the cabinet – the HF driver sits behind the magnet, and there must be air behind it. The 1.5 kHz crossover is cleanest done actively with DSP and delay alignment; passively, a measurement in the finished cabinet is mandatory.

How does the 12NCX910 differ from the 12NCX750?

The 12NCX910 has a 3" voice coil in the HF section instead of 2.4", 450 W AES, 99.5 dB sensitivity and 6.9 mm Xmax. In return it is considerably deeper at 210 mm and heavier at 6 kg. The 12NCX750 with fs 58 Hz, Qts 0.29 and Vas 63 l is the more compact choice when depth and weight count.

What is the 12NCX910N?

The N is the variant with an NSD dome in the HF driver instead of the titanium diaphragm; the Thiele-Small parameters at fs 57 Hz, Qts 0.3 and Vas 58 l are identical. Enclosure and crossover therefore stay the same, and the decision comes down to the character of the HF section.

Which power amp is recommended?

At 8 Ω and 450 W AES an amplifier in that class is appropriate, though 99.5 dB sensitivity means less power already delivers high levels. Crossed actively at 1.5 kHz the HF section needs only a fraction of it; a limiter protects both ways.
