18Sound 12ND930: 12" neodymium woofer with a strong motor for horn and reflex tops

A Qts of 0.21 makes a statement. The 18Sound 12ND930 is a 12" neodymium woofer from the ND series whose motor, with 21.2 Tm and only 57 g of moving mass, is tuned for maximum control. Add 500 W AES, 98 dB sensitivity, a 3" voice coil and a frequency range of 46 to 4,500 Hz.

At 4.4 kg the driver stays light, and the 140 mm mounting depth fits shallow cabinets. The Vas of 70 l at 50 Hz resonance and the 6.5 mm Xmax place the 12ND930 as a low-mid and fundamental-range woofer: it is meant to play fast, loud and clean above the subwoofer region, not to deliver deep bass from a large reflex box. That is exactly what the combination of high BL and low Qes is made for.

Use and enclosure

The EBP of 227 tells you where this is going: horn loading or a small bass-reflex enclosure. The bass-reflex guideline is about 12 l net tuned to 86 Hz with an f3 near 116 Hz. That sounds like little extension, but it is precisely the alignment for a compact top that starts at the sub crossover – or for the low-mid section of a 3-way box. Sealed, it would be 6.8 l with a 168 Hz system resonance, i.e. a midrange chamber. In a front-loaded horn the stiff motor extracts the efficiency that shows up as limited extension in a reflex box.

Usable to 4,500 Hz, the 12ND930 can be paired with both 1" and 1.4" compression drivers; the matching horns are in 18Sound's Horns & Waveguides category. The 1.65 mH inductance has to be tamed with impedance compensation in a passive crossover. For the exact tuning, use the enclosure calculator on 42.audio.

What to look out for

  • Qts 0.21 and BL 21.2 Tm: very tight motor, needs small boxes or horn loading.
  • Xmax 6.5 mm – a high-pass below the tuning frequency is mandatory.
  • 8 Ω, Re 5.5 Ω: a channel delivering 500 W into 8 Ω is a good match.
  • 4.4 kg and 140 mm mounting depth for light, shallow tops.
  • Compensate Le 1.65 mH in a passive network.

Frequently asked questions

12ND930 or 12ND940 – which one is right?

Both share the tight motor with a Qts around 0.2. The 12ND940 has a slightly smaller Vas of 64.8 l at a 49 Hz resonance and is trimmed for the lower midrange. The 12ND930 goes higher with a usable upper limit of 4,500 Hz and fits when the crossover to the tweeter needs to sit further up.

Can the 12ND930 play deeper in a larger reflex box?

With a Qts of 0.21, more volume brings hardly any extension, just a sagging bass slope and less control. The 12 l guideline at 86 Hz is the sensible basis; below that you hand over to a subwoofer.

How high can I cross over to the tweeter?

The usable range extends to 4,500 Hz. For clean directivity from a 12" driver you should cross well below that and pick the frequency according to the horn and the lower limit of the compression driver. The datasheet PDF helps with the frequency response.

18Sound 12ND930: manufacturer, spellings and classification

18Sound, 18 Sound and Eighteensound all refer to the same manufacturer: Eighteen Sound S.r.l. of Reggio Emilia, Italy. The 12ND930 is a 12-inch woofer with neodymium magnet from the ND series, available from 42.audio, 18Sound dealer in Germany, with datasheet and full specifications in the driver database.

At 42.audio you get the 18SOUND 12ND930 with datasheet PDF, all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas 18Sound.
