18Sound 12NTLS3500: 12" studio woofer with dual-gap motor and a 40 Hz lower limit
The 18Sound 12NTLS3500 is designated as a hi-fi and studio woofer, and the parameters back that up. The neodymium motor works with two air gaps and a 2x3.5" voice coil (dual gap), which pushes inductance down to 0.55 mH and spreads the motor force more evenly over the excursion than a single gap does. With 750 W AES, 93.5 dB sensitivity and a range of 40 to 4,000 Hz it is still no delicate hi-fi driver, but a woofer for large monitors and demanding home loudspeakers.
Fs 41 Hz, Qts 0.41, Vas 65 l, Xmax 7.9 mm and a Qms of 8.5 describe a driver with a soft suspension, low mechanical losses and moderate motor strength (BL 17.8 Tm). The 92 g moving mass suits the purpose: deep and controlled rather than maximally efficient. Weight stays low at 4.7 kg, while the 195 mm mounting depth is considerable.
Use and enclosure
The EBP of 95 is the lowest in 18Sound's 12" range and leaves you the choice between sealed and bass reflex. Sealed, the guideline gives 33 l with a system resonance of 71 Hz – a clean, well-damped basis for an active studio monitor with bass equalisation. As a bass-reflex enclosure the guideline is around 75 l tuned to 38 Hz with an f3 near 37 Hz; that is genuine extension for a twelve. Both options can be adapted to your dimensions with the enclosure calculator on 42.audio.
Thanks to the flat impedance curve the 12NTLS3500 also suits passive 2-way or 3-way designs where a 12" driver covers the range up into the midrange. The 4,000 Hz upper limit leaves room to set the crossover according to the tweeter and the directivity you want. At 750 W AES it also tolerates amplifiers that are frankly oversized for studio nearfield use.
What to look out for
- Dual-gap motor with 2x3.5" coil: Le 0.55 mH, low distortion in the fundamental range.
- Mounting depth 195 mm – much deeper than other 12" models, plan the cabinet accordingly.
- Qts 0.41 and EBP 95: sealed 33 l or bass reflex 75 l both possible.
- 93.5 dB sensitivity – less suited to PA levels than the WM models in the range.
- 8 Ω, Re 5.8 Ω; 750 W AES power handling.
Frequently asked questions
What distinguishes the 12NTLS3500 from the 12NLW9300?
Both have a Qts around 0.41 to 0.42 and similar enclosure sizes; the 12NLW9300 sits at 47 Hz resonance and 56 l Vas, the 12NTLS3500 at 41 Hz and 65 l. The NLW is a PA woofer built for level, while the NTLS with its dual-gap motor and 93.5 dB targets extension and low distortion in the studio.
Is it suitable for a passive hi-fi loudspeaker?
Yes, precisely because of the low Le of 0.55 mH and the small impedance rise. A bass-reflex enclosure around 75 l tuned to 38 Hz delivers deep bass you would otherwise expect from larger drivers, and the 4.7 kg keep the cabinet from becoming top-heavy.
Which amplifier makes sense?
For studio and living room an amplifier well below the 750 W AES is enough, since you rarely run sustained levels. More important is load stability into 8 Ω with Re 5.8 Ω and a clean high-pass if you tune the reflex box low.

Enclosure suggestion
The EBP of 95 is in the intermediate range — either works; sealed plays tighter, bass reflex deeper and louder. EBP = fs / Qes = 41 / 0.43
Sealed (Qtc 0.707)
- Enclosure volume Vb
- 32.9 l
- System resonance Fc
- 71 Hz

Vb is the required net internal volume, Fb the tuning frequency of the reflex port and F3 the frequency at which the level has dropped by 3 dB. Calculated approximation after Small. A starting point for simulation, not a finished build plan.
