18Sound 12W750: 16 Ω ferrite woofer with 98 dB for multi-driver boxes and bass reflex
The 18Sound 12W750 is a 12" ferrite woofer from the W series with a 3" voice coil, 600 W AES and 98 dB sensitivity. The version listed here has a nominal impedance of 16 Ω with Re 10.4 Ω – a variant that makes most sense when several drivers are to hang in parallel on one amplifier channel. Two in parallel give 8 Ω with double the power handling and more cone area.
The motor is strong at 23.5 Tm and the moving mass low at 55 g – hence the high efficiency and the frequency range up to 4,600 Hz. Fs 55 Hz, Qts 0.33, Vas 61 l and Xmax 8 mm suit a woofer/midrange working in a bass-reflex enclosure. The 1.2 mH inductance is less critical at 16 Ω relative to the impedance than it would be with an 8 Ω coil. At 7.5 kg and 148 mm mounting depth it is a typical ferrite driver.
Use and enclosure
With an EBP of 157 bass reflex is the appropriate enclosure type. The guideline is 38 l net tuned to 63 Hz with an f3 around 68 Hz. For a 2x12" box with two 16 Ω drivers in parallel you double the volume accordingly; such a top has plenty of headroom with 98 dB per driver and an 8 Ω total load. Sealed, 17 l gives a system resonance of 118 Hz, useful as a low-mid chamber in a 3-way system. The enclosure calculator on 42.audio provides the exact figures for your design.
The 4,600 Hz upper limit allows a crossover to a 1" compression driver with a horn from the 18Sound range to sit somewhat higher; because of the beaming of a 12" driver a lower crossover still makes sense. At 16 Ω an amplifier delivers only a fraction of its 8 Ω power, which you need to keep in mind when choosing an amplifier for a single driver.
What to look out for
- 16 Ω, Re 10.4 Ω – ideal for wiring two drivers in parallel to 8 Ω.
- Single driver: an amplifier delivers noticeably less power into 16 Ω.
- BL 23.5 Tm with Mms 55 g – strong motor, 98 dB.
- 7.5 kg ferrite magnet, mounting depth 148 mm.
- Bass-reflex guideline 38 l at 63 Hz.
Frequently asked questions
Why 16 Ω instead of 8 Ω?
For boxes with two or four drivers: two 16 Ω woofers in parallel give 8 Ω, and four in series-parallel do the same. That keeps the amplifier on a standard load. For a single driver a lower impedance is usually more practical because the amplifier can deliver more power.
How does the 12W750 differ from the 12LW801?
Same Qts of 0.33, but the 12W750 has 61 l Vas versus 41 l for the 12LW801. It therefore needs a slightly larger reflex box but delivers more level with its 98 dB. Both are in the driver database on 42.audio.
Which enclosure for a 2x12" box?
Around 38 l bass reflex per driver tuned to 63 Hz, so roughly double the volume for two. Wire the two 16 Ω drivers in parallel to 8 Ω. Set port area and length with the enclosure calculator on 42.audio.
At 42.audio you get the 18SOUND 12W750 with datasheet PDF, all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas 18Sound.
