18Sound 15LW1500: 15" subwoofer driver with 34 Hz resonance and 1,000 W AES
Within the 18Sound LW series, the 15LW1500 is the driver for low-end extension. Its resonance frequency sits at 34 Hz with a Vas of 195 l, making it the 15" ferrite woofer in this range that can be tuned the lowest. The key figures: 4" voice coil, 1,000 W AES power handling, 96 dB sensitivity, a ferrite motor with 22.1 Tm force factor and 9 mm Xmax.
The 96 dB is slightly below its siblings, but that is the natural consequence of a softer suspension and lower resonance: a woofer that goes deep trades efficiency for extension. The high Qms of 11.5 stands out, a sign of low mechanical losses in surround and spider. With Qts 0.28 and an EBP of 117 the 15LW1500 nonetheless remains a vented or horn driver, not a candidate for sealed boxes. The rated band spans 40 to 2,000 Hz.
Use and enclosure
The vented guideline is around 76 l tuned to 45 Hz, giving a lower cut-off near 53 Hz. That is a workable single-15" subwoofer format for clubs, small stages and mobile rigs, in which this driver reaches considerably lower than its more compactly aligned siblings in the same footprint. A sealed box of 36 l with a system resonance near 86 Hz makes little sense; the suspension is too compliant and the motor too strong for that. Work out the exact alignment, including larger volumes and lower tuning, with the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.
The rated range up to 2,000 Hz technically permits use as the bass driver in a 2-way top, but the 2.4 mH inductance and the low resonance favour pure subwoofer or bass-section duty with a crossover well below the upper limit. Mounting depth is 165 mm, weight 12.4 kg.
What to look out for
- Fs 34 Hz, Vas 195 l: the deepest ferrite 15" in the LW range, intended for subwoofer alignments.
- 96 dB sensitivity: a little less efficiency than its siblings, in exchange for extension.
- Le 2.4 mH: cross it over as a sub, do not plan on it as a midrange-capable driver.
- 1,000 W AES, 9 mm Xmax: set the limiter for excursion, not for the wattage figure.
- 165 mm mounting depth, 12.4 kg, 8 Ω nominal with Re 5 Ω.
Frequently asked questions
What separates the 15LW1500 from the 15ND940?
Both have Qts 0.28, but the 15ND940 is a neodymium driver with 38 Hz Fs and 174 l Vas, while the 15LW1500 is a ferrite driver with 34 Hz, 195 l and 96 dB. For maximum extension on a tight budget the 15LW1500 is the obvious pick; for lightweight cabinets with more efficiency, the 15ND940.
Which enclosure suits the 15LW1500?
As a guideline, about 76 l vented tuned to 45 Hz, which yields a lower limit near 53 Hz. Larger volumes and lower tuning are possible, but excursion demand below the tuning frequency rises, so a subsonic filter is essential.
Can I use the 15LW1500 in a 2-way top?
Technically the range extends to 2,000 Hz, but in practice its 2.4 mH inductance and 34 Hz resonance mark it as a bass and subwoofer driver. For tops with a high crossover, the 18Sound MB models are the better choice.
