18Sound 15NCX1000: 15" coax with 4" voice coils, 600 W and 96 dB for compact tops
The 15NCX1000 is the coaxial driver in 18Sound's NCX series with the heaviest motor layout: woofer and high-frequency section each run on a 4" voice coil, and the motor is a neodymium magnet system. The result is a 15" coax rated at 600 W AES, 96 dB sensitivity and a usable range of 44 Hz to 3600 Hz for the low-frequency section. The tweeter radiates through a titanium diaphragm into a 90° conical horn.
Among the 15" coaxials in the shop, the 15NCX1000 stands for the pairing of a large HF coil with a tightly controlled woofer motor. A BL product of 27.5 Tm against a moving mass of 110 g yields Qts 0.31 and, for a 15", a small Vas of 75 l. That means high control and a small cabinet, but no deep bass without a subwoofer. This is exactly the profile you want when a single box has to be loud, point-source and compact at the same time.
Use and enclosure
An EBP of 166 points clearly to bass reflex. As a guideline derived from the Thiele-Small parameters: about 39 l net, tuned at 64 Hz, with an f3 around 71 Hz. A sealed build ends up near 18 l with fc around 121 Hz, which is a monitor or top-cabinet alignment with a subwoofer below. The exact design including port length is a job for the enclosure calculator at 42.audio. An Xmax of 7.5 mm gives enough excursion headroom for a reflex box of this size, provided a high-pass filter sits below the tuning frequency.
The recommended crossover of 1.0 kHz should be read as a lower limit. The 4" HF coil is the reason the tweeter can be coupled this low: it tolerates more thermal and mechanical stress than smaller coils. With active crossovers and steep slopes you can approach 1.0 kHz; with a passive network and shallow slopes, stay well above it. Typical targets: stage monitors with high headroom, compact full-range tops for rental, active main monitors in the studio.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω nominal, Re 6.3 Ω: works with any common PA amplifier, 600 W AES as the power reference
- Mounting depth 197 mm: the cabinet needs that depth plus clearance for the terminals
- 8.5 kg despite neodymium: two 4" voice coils and the HF horn add mass
- Titanium HF diaphragm with 90° conical dispersion: wide near-field coverage
- Qts 0.31 and Vas 75 l: small box, but deep bass only with a subwoofer
Frequently asked questions
Is the 15NCX1000 suitable as a stage monitor?
Yes, that is one of its main purposes. Point-source radiation, a 90° cone and a small reflex volume of around 39 l fit a low-profile wedge. The 600 W rating leaves plenty of headroom for loud stages.
How does it differ from the 15NCX910?
The 15NCX910 uses 3" voice coils, has a higher sensitivity and a larger Vas of 107 l. The 15NCX1000 handles more power with its 4" coils, can be crossed lower and needs a smaller cabinet.
Which enclosure makes sense?
Bass reflex at about 39 l tuned around 64 Hz as a guideline. Sealed stays near 18 l, with fc around 121 Hz and a subwoofer taking over below. Verify the design with the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.
