18Sound 15NCX910: 15" coax with 99.5 dB, 3"/3" voice coils and 450 W for loud tops
99.5 dB sensitivity is why the 15NCX910 in 18Sound's NCX series is the first pick for high-output full-range tops. The 15" coaxial driver pairs a neodymium woofer with a 3" voice coil and a tweeter that also runs a 3" voice coil, rated at 450 W AES. The low-frequency section works from 50 Hz to 4000 Hz, and the tweeter radiates through an 80° cone.
The motor is strong: BL 21 Tm at 86 g moving mass, Fs 55 Hz, Qts 0.33 and Vas 107 l. With 7 mm Xmax the woofer has more excursion than the 15NCX750, which means more clean low end in the same cabinet. The driver sits in the middle of the family: tighter than the 15NCX750, but with a larger Vas than the 15NCX1000. If you want maximum efficiency from a single box without stepping up to a 4" coil model, this is the one.
Use and enclosure
An EBP of 162 recommends bass reflex. As a guideline: about 67 l net, tuned to 63 Hz, with f3 at 68 Hz. That is a manageable volume for a 15" top working with a subwoofer, or standing alone in rooms with moderate low-end demands. Sealed would be 30 l with fc around 118 Hz, usable as a stage monitor combined with a sub. Use the enclosure calculator at 42.audio for the exact design. The 205 mm mounting depth is the largest in the series and needs attention in the cabinet layout.
The recommended crossover to the tweeter is 1.2 kHz. The 3" HF coil handles this region well with active filtering; passively, cross higher and keep the slopes steep. The 80° pattern suits front-of-house in mid-sized rooms and monitor duty. One advantage of the coaxial principle remains in any case: the acoustic centres lie on one axis, and the dispersion through the crossover region stays even.
What to look out for
- 99.5 dB at 8 Ω: high efficiency, an amplifier around 450 W AES is more than enough
- Mounting depth 205 mm: the deepest driver in the 15" NCX family
- 6.5 kg: neodymium keeps the weight in check despite 3"/3" coils
- Xmax 7 mm with Vas 107 l: more excursion headroom than the 15NCX750
- Le 1.1 mH: account for it in impedance compensation with passive crossovers
Frequently asked questions
How does the 15NCX910N differ?
The 15NCX910N shares all woofer parameters, is rated 450 W AES and 99.5 dB, but carries 18Sound's NSD HF diaphragm. The choice is about high-frequency character, not enclosure design.
Which amplifier is the 15NCX910 meant for?
With Re of 5 Ω and 8 Ω nominal impedance it runs on any PA amplifier. A channel around 450 W AES into 8 Ω uses the full rating, and thanks to 99.5 dB you reach high levels with less power too.
Is bass reflex mandatory?
No, but it makes sense. The guideline is 67 l tuned to 63 Hz with f3 around 68 Hz. Sealed at 30 l the driver becomes a pure sub partner with fc around 118 Hz.
