18Sound 15NCX750: lightweight 15" neodymium coax, 98 dB and 4.9 kg for monitors and tops

At 4.9 kg, the 15NCX750 is the lightest 15" coaxial driver in 18Sound's NCX series carried by 42.audio. A neodymium motor, a 3" voice coil in the woofer and a 2.4" voice coil in the tweeter deliver 400 W AES power handling at 98 dB sensitivity. The low-frequency section covers 55 Hz to 4500 Hz, and the titanium-diaphragm tweeter radiates through an 80° conical horn.

What sets this driver apart from its siblings are the woofer parameters: Fs 49 Hz, Qts 0.37 and a Vas of 141 l. That makes it the softest-suspended motor in the 15" NCX family, with a BL product of 18.4 Tm against only 81 g of moving mass. A softer Qts means the 15NCX750 reaches lower in larger reflex cabinets than the more tightly driven models, but it also demands that volume. For stage monitors that need to deliver plenty of level at low weight, that is a sensible compromise.

Use and enclosure

The bass reflex guideline is generous: about 122 l tuned to 50 Hz with an f3 at 51 Hz. That is a full-range top without a subwoofer for speech and music in mid-sized rooms. If you lack the volume, build smaller and accept a higher tuning point; the enclosure calculator at 42.audio shows what that does to the response. Sealed would be around 53 l with fc at 94 Hz, useful as a wedge with a sub. The Xmax of 5.5 mm is moderate, so a high-pass below the tuning frequency is mandatory.

The crossover to the tweeter is recommended at 1.2 kHz. With the 2.4" HF coil that is the lower limit; with passive networks and shallow slopes go somewhat higher. The 80° cone gives broad, even coverage of the kind needed in monitors and near-field use. If you need directional control instead, look at the sister model 15NCX750H with its rectangular, directional horn.

What to look out for

  • Only 4.9 kg: ideal when monitors or tops are carried and flown
  • Mounting depth 185 mm: shallow wedge cabinets are feasible
  • Vas 141 l and Qts 0.37: needs volume, but extension without a sub is possible
  • Re 5.4 Ω, 8 Ω nominal: uncritical for common amplifiers, 400 W AES as the reference

Both share the woofer with Fs 49 Hz, Qts 0.37 and Vas 141 l. The 15NCX750 has the 80° cone at 98 dB, the 15NCX750H a rectangular horn with tighter vertical dispersion, slightly lower sensitivity and slightly more weight. Choose the H for directional coverage, the cone for near-field and monitor use.

Can I run it without a subwoofer?

Yes, in a bass reflex box around 122 l tuned to 50 Hz it reaches an f3 of 51 Hz as a guideline. That is enough for speech and live music with moderate low end; for club levels add a sub.

Which amplifier makes sense?

An amplifier around the 400 W AES rating into 8 Ω is a good starting point. With 98 dB sensitivity the driver is efficient, so a clean limiter matters more than maximum power.
