18Sound 15NLW4500: 15" subwoofer driver with 4.5" voice coil and 1,500 W AES
The 18Sound 15NLW4500 is all about low bass. This high-performance woofer from the NLW series carries a 4.5" voice coil, handles 1,500 W AES and moves its 201 g cone with 14.5 mm Xmax. A neodymium magnet with 29.7 Tm force factor keeps the weight at 11.4 kg despite the massive motor. The rated range ends at 1,000 Hz: this is a pure subwoofer driver, not a woofer for multi-way cabinets.
Sensitivity of 96.3 dB is a respectable figure for a driver with this cone mass and shows how strong the motor is. Fs 35 Hz, Qts 0.26, Qms 7.8 and, for a 15", a small Vas of 111 l produce an EBP of 130 and thus a clear recommendation for vented or bandpass loading in compact enclosures. The large voice coil is the key to thermal power handling: more winding area dissipates heat faster.
Use and enclosure
The vented guideline for the 15NLW4500 is only about 35 l tuned to 49 Hz, with a lower cut-off around 60 Hz. That is a remarkably small volume for a 15" sub and opens the way to compact single- and dual-15" subwoofers for touring and installation. If you want more extension, go to larger volumes with lower tuning in the enclosure calculator at 42.audio; the 14.5 mm excursion and 1,500 W AES provide reserves that none of the other 15" drivers in this group can match. Sealed, the figure would be 17 l with a system resonance near 95 Hz, which makes no sense for a subwoofer.
The crossover to the top is naturally low with this driver, well below 1,000 Hz. The 1.62 mH inductance plays no role in the subwoofer band. For cabinet construction allow 199 mm of mounting depth, the deepest in this product group, and the amplification must deliver 1,500 W AES at 8 Ω with Re 5.4 Ω continuously and with a clean limiter.
What to look out for
- 4.5" voice coil and 1,500 W AES: the highest thermal power handling of the 18Sound 15" drivers in this comparison.
- 14.5 mm Xmax: large linear excursion for subwoofers, set the limiter for displacement.
- Vas 111 l, Qts 0.26: compact vented box around 35 l as a starting point.
- 199 mm mounting depth, 11.4 kg despite neodymium: a massive motor.
- Frequency range up to 1,000 Hz: pure subwoofer driver, not for 2-way tops.
Frequently asked questions
How does the 15NLW4500 differ from the 15NLW9300 or 15NLW9401?
All three have Qts 0.26, but the 15NLW9300 and 15NLW9401 sit at 39 Hz Fs with a larger Vas of 170 l and 134 l respectively. The 15NLW4500 at 35 Hz and 111 l fits a smaller box and brings the strongest figures for power handling and excursion with its 4.5" voice coil and 14.5 mm Xmax.
Which enclosure for the 15NLW4500?
As a guideline, about 35 l vented tuned to 49 Hz, which sets the lower limit around 60 Hz. For music with genuine low bass a larger volume with lower tuning is worthwhile, and the 14.5 mm excursion carries that easily.
Which amplifier is required?
An amplifier delivering 1,500 W AES at 8 Ω, and correspondingly more with two drivers in parallel at 4 Ω. The limiter should be set for the 14.5 mm Xmax below the tuning frequency, and a subsonic filter is mandatory.
