18Sound 15NLW9300: 15" neodymium woofer with 4" voice coil for compact vented subs

The 15NLW9300 is a 15" woofer from 18Sound's NLW series, the family of neodymium woofers with a large voice coil built for subwoofer and bass duty. It comes with a 4" voice coil, 8 Ω nominal impedance, 800 W power handling and 97 dB sensitivity. The neodymium motor keeps the weight at 6.8 kg, a real advantage over ferrite for a driver with this much motor strength.

Among 15" neodymium woofers the 15NLW9300 stands out for a strong motor on a relatively light cone: BL of 24.4 Tm on 107 g of moving mass. Together with Qts 0.26 and Qes 0.27 this makes a driver that is heavily damped electrically and does its best work in vented boxes. Resonance sits at 39 Hz, linear excursion at 8 mm, and the inductance of 0.95 mH is pleasantly low for a 4" coil.

Use and enclosure

With an EBP of 144 the 15NLW9300 belongs in a vented box or a horn; sealed, very little low-end extension remains. As a guide value from the Thiele-Small parameters you get roughly 53 l net volume tuned to 55 Hz with an f3 near 67 Hz. That is a compact format for a bass aimed at output and punch rather than the deepest sub-bass – typical for kick bins, tops with a 15" bass section or arrays of several small cabinets. Run the exact design through the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.

The usable range covers 50 Hz to 3000 Hz. Used as the bass in a 2-way box the crossover can sit well into the midrange; as a pure subwoofer you cross much lower. The 174 mm mounting depth also fits shallow cabinets.

What to look out for

  • 8 Ω nominal impedance, Re 6 Ω: two units in parallel still work well on one amplifier channel.
  • Neodymium magnet, only 6.8 kg with a 4" voice coil and 800 W power handling.
  • Mounting depth 174 mm, Xmax 8 mm linear excursion.
  • Qts 0.26 and EBP 144: for vented or horn loading, not for sealed boxes.

Frequently asked questions

How does the 15NLW9300 differ from the 15NLW9401?

Both share Fs 39 Hz and Qts 0.26, but the 15NLW9401 brings higher power handling and a smaller Vas of 134 l. The 15NLW9300 is lighter on the cone at 107 g and only slightly less sensitive at 97 dB. If you need maximum excursion, take the 9401; for a smaller budget and less excursion demand the 9300 is enough.

Which amplifier suits the 15NLW9300?

A channel delivering power in the region of the 800 W AES rating into 8 Ω is a good basis. What matters is a limiter or high-pass below the tuning frequency, because a vented driver loses almost all damping below fb.

Can I load the 15NLW9300 into a horn?

Yes, the high EBP of 144 and low Qts favour horn loading. The 53 l guide value applies to vented boxes only; for a horn you need to calculate the front chamber and horn profile separately.

At 42.audio you get the 18SOUND 15NLW9300 with datasheet PDF, all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas 18Sound.
