18Sound 15NLW9500: 15" neodymium woofer with Fs 35 Hz for low-tuned vented boxes

Within 18Sound's NLW series the 15NLW9500 is the candidate for extension. With a resonance of 35 Hz, Qts 0.32 and Vas 163 l it targets larger, lower-tuned vented boxes, whereas the more compact NLW models lean toward, high-output alignments. The 4" voice coil handles 1000 W AES and the neodymium motor keeps the weight at 7 kg.

Sensitivity of 96 dB is slightly lower than the more compact NLW models – the logical consequence of the heavier 146 g cone and the softer suspension that deliver the low resonance. In return the inductance of 0.8 mH is remarkably low for a 4" coil, which keeps the response clean in the upper bass. Linear excursion is 9 mm, BL 21.6 Tm, and the stated range runs from 42 Hz to 2000 Hz.

Use and enclosure

The EBP of 103 sits right at the point where vented loading is clearly the better choice. The guide value from the TSP is a net volume of about 93 l tuned to 41 Hz with an f3 near 45 Hz. That is a genuine subwoofer figure for a 15" driver and exactly the alignment the 15NLW9500 was made for: bass bins for live, club or home cinema use with real demands on extension. Sealed you would be at roughly 42 l with fc 77 Hz, which throws away the extension. Fine-tuning and port design are done in the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.

Run the driver as a subwoofer with a low crossover; the 2000 Hz upper limit shows it was not meant for midrange. A high-pass below the tuning frequency is part of any vented sub in this power class.

What to look out for

  • Fs 35 Hz, Vas 163 l: for large, low-tuned vented boxes around 93 l.
  • 1000 W AES into 8 Ω (Re 4.9 Ω), 4" voice coil.
  • Le only 0.8 mH despite the 4" coil.
  • Neodymium magnet, 7 kg, mounting depth 177 mm.
  • Xmax 9 mm linear excursion.

Frequently asked questions

What separates the 15NLW9500 from the 15ND830?

Both have Qts 0.32, but the 15ND830 sits elsewhere in the parameter space with Fs 39 Hz and Vas 213 l. The 15NLW9500 reaches lower with its 35 Hz resonance and, thanks to the smaller Vas, needs less volume for the same tuning. Both are in the shop with datasheets.

Is the 15NLW9500 suitable for a home cinema subwoofer?

Yes, an f3 around 45 Hz in a vented box is a good starting point for a 15" pro woofer. In a living room the room gain helps further, and the 96 dB sensitivity makes it loud with a moderate amplifier.

How much amplifier power does the driver need?

Power handling is 1000 W AES into 8 Ω. An amplifier of that order uses it fully; more important than the last few watts is a limiter so that the 9 mm excursion is not exceeded continuously.
