18Sound 15NMB1000: 15" neodymium mid-woofer with 900 W AES and BL 25.2 Tm

In the 15NMB1000 from the NMB series by 18Sound (Eighteen Sound), a very strong motor meets low weight: BL 25.2 Tm, 900 W AES from a 4" voice coil and yet only 6 kg, because a neodymium ring replaces the ferrite block. Sensitivity is 101 dB, the operating range 45 Hz to 2,500 Hz – a 15" driver that works the lower midrange with authority and hands over to another section early at the top.

A Qts of 0.24 with Fs 46 Hz and Vas 124 l describes an electrically well-damped cone whose moving mass of 100 g is solid for a 15". An Xmax of 6.5 mm offers more travel than most mid-woofers of this size. Le of 0.89 mH is low for a 4" coil, which the crossover transition region appreciates. The mounting depth of 174 mm is the flip side of the long motor and must be accounted for in the cabinet.

Use and enclosure

The 15NMB1000 is a candidate for lower-mid sections in three-way systems and for powerful two-way tops with a large compression driver. The bass reflex guideline is 31 l tuned to 70 Hz with f3 around 88 Hz – a compact volume made possible by the tight motor. The EBP of 192 confirms vented or horn loading as the appropriate choice. As a pure midrange in a sealed midrange chamber, the guideline suggests about 16 l with a system resonance of 136 Hz. The driver is not meant for full-range extension, but paired with subwoofers it runs all the more confidently. The enclosure calculator on 42.audio shows how different volumes behave.

The upper limit of 2,500 Hz requires a compression driver that can be crossed low enough – the crossover point sensibly sits well below that limit. Large drivers and horns with a correspondingly low usable frequency are in the 18Sound horns and waveguides category at 42.audio.

What to look out for

  • 8 Ω, Re 5.3 Ω: 900 W AES calls for a capable amplifier with a limiter.
  • 6 kg for a 15" with a 4" voice coil – neodymium makes the driver suitable for flown systems.
  • Mounting depth 174 mm: deeper than many ferrite drivers, check the space behind the baffle.
  • Xmax 6.5 mm and Qts 0.24: compact reflex volume around 31 l, high-pass below 70 Hz.
  • Response up to 2,500 Hz: the HF section must cross low, 1" drivers are usually too small here.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 15NMB1000 fit a two-way top with a 1" driver?

Probably not. With an upper limit of 2,500 Hz, the HF section needs a crossover well below that, which 1" drivers generally cannot do cleanly. Larger compression drivers with a low usable frequency, or a three-way concept, are the sensible route.

Where is the difference to the 15MB1000?

The 15MB1000 uses ferrite and weighs correspondingly more, with Fs 48 Hz, Qts 0.31 and Vas 132.5 l. The 15NMB1000 is more tightly damped at Qts 0.24, offers 900 W AES and 101 dB and weighs only 6 kg. Both are in the 42.audio shop with datasheets.

How much amplifier power is needed?

The 900 W AES at 8 Ω mark the ceiling. With 101 dB sensitivity the driver reaches high levels on considerably less; to exploit the full potential, combine a powerful amplifier with high-pass and limiter.
