18Sound 15NTLW3500: 15" neodymium bass with 2x3.5" dual-gap coil and 900 W
The 15NTLW3500 is the stronger of 18Sound's two NTLW models in the 15" format. Two 3.5" voice coils in a neodymium dual-gap motor handle 900 W AES, sensitivity is 98 dB and the weight is 5.1 kg. Like the smaller 15NTLW2500 it is meant as a woofer with midrange capability, with a stated range from 40 Hz to 4000 Hz.
What stands out is the extremely low inductance of 0.46 mH – a very good figure for a double coil of 3.5" diameter, and it gives the driver headroom at the top. The remaining data: Fs 45 Hz, Qts 0.39, Qes 0.4, Vas 131 l, Mms 106 g, BL 19.5 Tm and a linear excursion of 8.3 mm. The somewhat higher Qts compared with the NLW woofers leads to larger but deeper-reaching vented alignments.
Use and enclosure
With EBP 112 a vented box is the recommendation. The guide value from the TSP is around 132 l net, tuned to 44 Hz with an f3 also near 44 Hz – a big volume for a top, but just right for a bass-midrange driver with real extension. If you want to build smaller, tune smaller and higher and accept less extension. Sealed would come out at about 57 l with fc 82 Hz, which only makes sense as a mid chamber in a 3-way system. Run the variants through the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.
Thanks to the 4000 Hz upper limit and 0.46 mH the 15NTLW3500 can be crossed high in a 2-way box; a 2" compression driver then takes over comfortably. Plan for the 229 mm mounting depth in the cabinet, since the dual-gap motor is deeper than a simple neodymium motor.
What to look out for
- 900 W AES into 8 Ω (Re 5.2 Ω) via two 3.5" voice coils.
- Le only 0.46 mH: upper limit 4000 Hz.
- 98 dB sensitivity, 5.1 kg weight.
- Mounting depth 229 mm.
- Qts 0.39, Vas 131 l: vented guide value 132 l, f3 near 44 Hz.
Frequently asked questions
15NTLW3500 or 15TLW3000?
The 15TLW3000 is the ferrite counterpart with a 2x4" coil, 1500 W, Vas 80 l and 12.5 kg. The 15NTLW3500 is far lighter at 5.1 kg, offers the higher efficiency at 98 dB and runs to 4000 Hz, much further up. For tops the NTLW3500 is the better choice, for pure subwoofers the TLW3000.
How high can I cross the 15NTLW3500?
The upper limit is 4000 Hz and the low 0.46 mH inductance helps. In a 2-way box you cross well below that so the 15" cone does not beam too much before the horn takes over.
Does the 15NTLW3500 also fit a box smaller than 132 l?
Yes, the guide value is not a requirement. With a smaller volume and higher tuning the f3 rises, but the cabinet becomes more manageable. The enclosure calculator shows you the trade-off directly.
