18Sound 15TLW3000: 15" ferrite subwoofer with 2x4" dual-gap coil and 1500 W
1500 W AES on a 15" driver – the 15TLW3000 from 18Sound is a subwoofer for high continuous load. This is made possible by a ferrite dual-gap motor with two 4" voice coils that spreads the heat over two windings. The driver is designed for 4 Ω nominal impedance (Re 2.5 Ω) and weighs 12.5 kg; the ferrite magnet makes it heavier than its neodymium relatives but also immune to thermal demagnetisation.
The Thiele-Small parameters are made for vented subwoofers: Fs 44 Hz, Qts 0.39, Qes 0.41 and an unusually small Vas of 80 l for a 15". Mms 177 g, BL 18 Tm and 9 mm linear excursion complete the picture. Sensitivity is 95 dB, stated range 48 Hz to 2200 Hz, inductance 1 mH.
Use and enclosure
With EBP 107 and Qts 0.39 the 15TLW3000 belongs in a vented box. The guide value is about 80 l net tuned to 43 Hz with an f3 near 43 Hz. The small Vas makes this possible: for a 15" sub reaching down to around 43 Hz, 80 l is a compact format. Sealed would be roughly 35 l with fc 80 Hz, wasting the extension. The enclosure calculator at 42.audio gives port area and length suited to the high power, so the port does not compress too early.
The 4 Ω design calls for an amplifier that delivers high power reliably at this impedance. Paralleling two drivers gives 2 Ω and only makes sense with amplifiers rated for it. Plan for the 245 mm mounting depth in the cabinet; as a subwoofer you cross low, so the 2200 Hz upper limit plays no role.
What to look out for
- 1500 W AES power handling via two 4" voice coils in a dual-gap motor.
- 4 Ω nominal impedance, Re 2.5 Ω: the amplifier must drive 4 Ω safely.
- Ferrite magnet, 12.5 kg weight, mounting depth 245 mm.
- Vas 80 l: compact vented guide value around 80 l, f3 near 43 Hz.
- Xmax 9 mm, 95 dB sensitivity.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the 15TLW3000 a 4 Ω driver?
Because it is designed as a high-power subwoofer: most amplifiers deliver considerably more power into 4 Ω than into 8 Ω, so the 1500 W rating becomes reachable. The price is that two drivers in parallel give 2 Ω and then need an amplifier suited to that.
What is the difference from the 15NTLW3500?
The 15NTLW3500 has neodymium, a 2x3.5" coil, 900 W and 98 dB at far lower weight. The 15TLW3000 handles more at 1500 W and, with its smaller Vas of 80 l, fits a more compact box, but it is much heavier at 12.5 kg and only meant to run to 2200 Hz.
Which enclosure for a live subwoofer?
Vented around 80 l tuned to 43 Hz is the guide value. Because of the high power you should choose a generous port area and set a high-pass below fb so the 9 mm Xmax is not exceeded.
