18Sound 15W700: 15" ferrite bass-midrange driver with 99 dB and 38 Hz resonance

When a 15" driver has to reach both low and high, 18Sound's 15W700 is an obvious choice. This ferrite woofer from the W series combines a 38 Hz resonance with a stated range up to 5000 Hz, 99 dB sensitivity and a 3" voice coil rated at 450 W AES. The moving mass of 80 g is low for a 15" woofer and the motor with BL 18.4 Tm is strong.

The parameters Qts 0.3, Qes 0.33 and Vas 217 l describe a soft, large cone with strong electrical damping – the combination that pairs high efficiency with vented-box suitability. The low Qms of 3.8 indicates high mechanical damping in the suspension. Weight 8.5 kg, mounting depth 168 mm, inductance 1.57 mH, linear excursion 6.5 mm.

Use and enclosure

EBP 115 assigns the 15W700 to a vented box. The guide value from the TSP: about 103 l net, tuned to 47 Hz with an f3 near 53 Hz. For a 15" top with a horn that is a volume delivering strong, deep bass without a subwoofer; in a PA with subs the box can be smaller and the crossover higher. As a midrange in a 3-way system the driver goes into a sealed mid chamber, for which the guide value is around 48 l. The enclosure calculator at 42.audio helps with both variants.

The 5000 Hz upper limit gives plenty of freedom for the crossover; in practice a compression driver on a horn takes over well below that so the 15" cone's coverage does not narrow too much. In loud applications with low tuning the 6.5 mm excursion is the limiting factor – a high-pass below fb protects it.

What to look out for

  • 99 dB sensitivity, 80 g cone mass, stated range 38–5000 Hz.
  • 450 W AES into 8 Ω (Re 5.7 Ω), 3" voice coil.
  • Ferrite magnet, 8.5 kg, mounting depth 168 mm.
  • Xmax 6.5 mm: bass in tops, not a subwoofer.
  • Vas 217 l: vented guide value 103 l, sealed mid chamber around 48 l.

Frequently asked questions

How do the 15W700 and 15W750 differ?

The 15W750 has 600 W power handling and 8 mm excursion at slightly lower efficiency. The 15W700 is more efficient at 99 dB, more strongly damped electrically (Qts 0.3) and runs to 5000 Hz, but has only 450 W and 6.5 mm excursion. For horn-loaded tops the 15W700, for more bass headroom the 15W750.

Does the 15W700 fit a box smaller than 103 l?

Yes, with higher tuning. The f3 then rises above 53 Hz, which is no drawback in a PA with subwoofers. The enclosure calculator shows you the curve for any volume.

How does it compare with the Beyma 15WR400?

Both have Qts 0.3, but the Beyma has a slightly lower resonance at Fs 36 Hz and Vas 236 l, and needs more volume. The 15W700 is close at 38 Hz and designed for high efficiency at 99 dB; both are in the shop.

At 42.audio you get the 18SOUND 15W700 with datasheet PDF, all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas 18Sound.
