18Sound 18iD/iD200: 18" neodymium subwoofer with 2 Ω and 5.3" voice coil
The 18iD/iD200 is an 18" subwoofer from 18Sound's iD series, positioned as a super-performance woofer for active systems with matching amplifier modules. Its most striking feature is the 2 Ω nominal impedance with Re of 1.5 Ω. This is not a driver for any random PA amplifier, but for amplifiers designed for 2 Ω loads that deliver high current into low impedance. The large 5.3" voice coil (18Sound quotes 5.35") handles 1800 W and sits in a neodymium motor.

Use and enclosure

These figures mainly show that, by the textbook, the driver is not optimised for passive deep bass: in practice the 18iD works in larger boxes with lower tuning and DSP equalisation, where 15.5 mm Xmax and 1800 W handling make up for the missing textbook extension. As a subwoofer it is crossed over low; although the operating range extends to 2500 Hz, the 2 Ω design is clearly tailored to active subwoofer amplifiers with limiter and high-pass.

Frequently asked questions
Can I run the 18iD/iD200 on a normal 4 Ω PA amplifier?
Only if the amplifier is explicitly rated for 2 Ω. On an amplifier that tolerates a minimum of 4 Ω you risk overheating or protection shutdown. Two drivers in series give 4 Ω and are an option for dual-18 cabinets.
Why is the Vas so small?
Vas 67 l results from a stiff suspension on an 18" cone area (Sd 0.1225 m²). This allows small boxes but requires electronic boost in the deep bass – exactly what the iD series with matching amplifiers is designed for.
How deep does the 18iD go?
The operating range starts at 30 Hz. How deep the cabinet actually reaches depends on volume, tuning and DSP; the classic guidelines with fb at 56 Hz sit far higher, but they are not the practical limit.
