18Sound 18LW1400: 18" woofer in 4 Ω with 1,000 W AES and extension down to 28 Hz

The 18Sound 18LW1400 is the 4 Ω version of an 18" ferrite woofer from the LW series, rated at 1,000 W AES and 97 dB sensitivity. With a lower limit of 28 Hz and a nominal range up to 2,500 Hz it belongs to the drivers that work both as a subwoofer and as the bass section of a full-range system. The low impedance is deliberate: Re 3.6 Ω draws more current and therefore more power from an amplifier channel than an 8 Ω coil would.

The Thiele-Small parameters describe a well-balanced driver: Fs 33 Hz, Qts 0.32, Vas 210 l, Xmax 9 mm. The moving mass of 190 g is driven by 22.1 Tm, and the low inductance of 1.5 mH keeps the upper bass from rolling off early. A Qts of 0.32 is slightly higher than on the tighter models of the series, which means more freedom in enclosure choice. Close relatives in the database are the Beyma 18P1000FeV2/S and the FaitalPRO 18HP1030, both around Qts 0.32; within the 18Sound range the 18LW2400 is the 8 Ω brother with similar figures.

Use and enclosure

With an EBP of 97 the 18LW1400 is one of the few 18" PA bass drivers where both bass reflex and sealed alignments make sense. The vented guideline is around 120 l net volume tuned to 39 Hz, with a lower cut-off f3 near 42 Hz. That is a full-grown subwoofer that plays deep without equalisation. Sealed, the guideline is about 54 l with a system resonance of 73 Hz, interesting for a kick bass or a full-range cabinet with DSP correction. Fine-tuning is done with the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.

Towards the top, Le 1.5 mH lets the driver run cleanly into the upper bass; the crossover to a midrange or horn belongs well below the 2,500 Hz limit. Keep the mounting depth of 215 mm and the weight of 13.3 kg in mind when designing the cabinet.

What to look out for

  • 4 Ω nominal, Re 3.6 Ω: the amplifier must be stable into 4 Ω, avoid paralleling two drivers.
  • 1,000 W AES at 97 dB: high output, but plan for a limiter.
  • Xmax 9 mm: with a 39 Hz tuning, place the high-pass below it.
  • Mounting depth 215 mm, 13.3 kg: ferrite magnet, needs a sturdy baffle.
  • Le 1.5 mH: clean upper bass, also suitable for full-range cabinets.

Frequently asked questions

Why 4 Ω instead of 8 Ω?

A 4 Ω coil pulls roughly twice the power from an amplifier channel at the same voltage. That makes sense for one driver per channel. If you want to run two drivers in parallel on one channel, the 8 Ω brother 18LW2400 is the better pick.

Bass reflex or sealed?

Both work, the EBP of 97 allows it. Bass reflex around 120 l tuned to 39 Hz gives extension to roughly 42 Hz. Sealed at about 54 l is more compact but only plays deep with DSP correction and costs excursion headroom.

What is the difference to the Beyma 18P1000FeV2/S?

The parameters are very close: Fs 33 Hz on both, Qts 0.32 on both, Vas 210 l versus 230 l. Both are ferrite drivers of the same class; the decision comes down to impedance, mounting dimensions and the power handling you need.

At 42.audio you get the 18SOUND 18LW1400 with datasheet PDF, all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas 18Sound.

Enclosure suggestion

The EBP of 97 is in the intermediate range — either works; sealed plays tighter, bass reflex deeper and louder. EBP = fs / Qes = 33 / 0.34
