18Sound 18LW2420: 18" woofer with 1,300 W AES, 10 mm Xmax and deep extension for large subs
Within the 18Sound LW series the 18LW2420 is the driver for anyone who wants the most extension a ferrite 18" can deliver. Qts 0.36, Fs 34 Hz and Vas 196 l describe a suspension tuned softer than on the tighter LW models, combined with 10 mm Xmax and 1,300 W AES power handling. The 4" voice coil is driven by 25.5 Tm, the moving mass is 210 g, and sensitivity still stays at 98 dB.
The stated bandwidth is 30 Hz to 2,500 Hz, and the inductance of 1.5 mH keeps the upper bass open. Close relatives in the database are the Beyma 18LEX1600Fe and the Beyma 18LEX1000Fe at Qts 0.38 as well as the B&C 18PZW100 at Qts 0.36; within the 18Sound range the 18TLW3000 at Qts 0.35 is the nearest neighbour. Weight of 12.4 kg and mounting depth of 215 mm are in the usual range for 18" ferrite drivers of this power class.
Use and enclosure
With an EBP of 89 the 18LW2420 allows both bass reflex and sealed enclosures, and the guidelines clearly show where its strength lies: bass reflex with around 157 l net volume, tuned to 36 Hz, gives a lower cut-off f3 near 37 Hz. That is a large subwoofer that plays very deep without equalisation, ideal for live bass, cinema subs or DIY home theatre where volume is not an issue. Sealed, the guideline is 69 l with a system resonance of 67 Hz; compact, but it demands DSP correction at the bottom and costs excursion headroom. The enclosure calculator at 42.audio lets you run both variants with real port dimensions.
For a pure sub the crossover to the tops typically sits in the lower part of the stated band; as the bass in a full-range box the driver can run considerably higher thanks to Le 1.5 mH, but always clearly below the nominal limit of 2,500 Hz.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω nominal, Re 5.2 Ω: amplifier channels around 1,300 W into 8 Ω make full use of the rating.
- Xmax 10 mm: more excursion than the tighter LW models, designed for low tunings around 36 Hz.
- Vented guideline 157 l: plan for a big cabinet, rewarded with f3 around 37 Hz.
- Mounting depth 215 mm, 12.4 kg: ferrite, reinforce the baffle accordingly.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the 18LW2420 need such a large box?
The comparatively high Qts of 0.36 at Vas 196 l leads to around 157 l vented volume by the classic approximation formulas. In return you get a tuning around 36 Hz and extension down to about 37 Hz without equalisation. Smaller boxes are possible but shift the lower limit upwards.
Can the 18LW2420 be used sealed?
Yes, the EBP of 89 allows it. The guideline is 69 l with a 67 Hz system resonance. For real sub-bass you then need DSP correction and must keep the 10 mm Xmax in mind, because excursion rises sharply below resonance.
Difference to the Beyma 18LEX1600Fe?
Both are 18" ferrite drivers with very similar parameters: Fs 34 Hz on both, Qts 0.36 versus 0.38, Vas 196 l versus 188 l. They end up in similar enclosures. The choice comes down to power handling, mounting dimensions and excursion, which you compare in the datasheet.
At 42.audio you get the 18SOUND 18LW2420 with datasheet PDF, all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas 18Sound.

Enclosure suggestion
The EBP of 89 is in the intermediate range — either works; sealed plays tighter, bass reflex deeper and louder. EBP = fs / Qes = 34 / 0.38
Sealed (Qtc 0.707)
- Enclosure volume Vb
- 68.6 l
- System resonance Fc
- 67 Hz

Vb is the required net internal volume, Fb the tuning frequency of the reflex port and F3 the frequency at which the level has dropped by 3 dB. Calculated approximation after Small. A starting point for simulation, not a finished build plan.
