18Sound 18W1001: 18" ferrite bass with 99 dB and Qts 0.23 for horn and reflex

Efficiency before excursion – that sums up the 18W1001 from 18Sound's W series. 99 dB sensitivity, a moving mass of only 0.139 kg and a Qts of 0.23 make it a driver that produces a lot of level from little power. The ferrite motor with 4" voice coil delivers 27.6 Tm, and power handling is 1000 W at 8 Ω.

With 7 mm Xmax the excursion is modest, but the response spans 37 Hz to 4700 Hz – unusually wide for an 18" and a sign of a light, stiff cone. Within the 18Sound range the 18W1001 is the classic bass for horn loading and kick-bass duty, not the deep-bass specialist. Its 205 mm mounting depth is shallow for an 18" driver.

Use and enclosure

An EBP of 146 is unambiguous: horn or bass reflex, sealed boxes deliver little depth. The bass reflex guideline is about 59 l tuned to 55 Hz with f3 around 71 Hz – a compact kick-bass that is complemented by horn loading or a subwoofer underneath. Sealed would give about 32 l with fc at 108 Hz, sensible only as a bandpass chamber or inside a horn. The enclosure calculator at 42.audio shows how the alignments behave with Vas 268 l and fs 35 Hz.

As the bass in a 2-way horn system the 18W1001 can be crossed over high thanks to its 4700 Hz bandwidth; the crossover should still sit well above the 37 Hz lower limit and take the beaming of an 18" cone into account.

What to look out for

  • Qts 0.23 and EBP 146: horn loading or reflex, not a candidate for sealed boxes
  • Xmax 7 mm – a high-pass filter below the tuning frequency is mandatory
  • Mounting depth only 205 mm, but 13.6 kg of ferrite weight
  • 8 Ω, Re 5.8 Ω, 1000 W handling: runs on almost any amplifier

Frequently asked questions

Does the 18W1001 work as a deep-bass subwoofer?

Only to a limited extent: with 7 mm Xmax and a reflex tuning around 55 Hz it is a kick-bass. For deep bass, a long-throw driver with more Xmax is the better choice.

How does it differ from the Beyma 18QLEX1600Fe?

Both have Qts 0.23; the Beyma sits lower at fs 30 Hz with a smaller Vas of 195 l. The 18W1001 with fs 35 Hz and 268 l Vas leans even further towards efficiency and horn operation.

Which amplifier suits it?

An 8 Ω amplifier up to 1000 W is plenty; with 99 dB sensitivity it reaches high levels at low power. More important than watts is a clean high-pass to protect the cone.
