18Sound 18W1300: 18" ferrite woofer with 99.5 dB efficiency and 336 l Vas
The 18W1300 belongs to 18Sound's W series and is a woofer built around a light cone and high efficiency: 99.5 dB sensitivity with only 0.129 kg of moving mass. The ferrite magnet drives a 4" voice coil, power handling is 850 W and nominal impedance 8 Ω with Re of 5 Ω.
The Vas of 336 l is large, which reveals a soft suspension and a light cone. Together with fs 35 Hz and Qts 0.33 this gives a driver that plays deep in large vented boxes without needing much power. Xmax of 8.5 mm sets the limit, though: the 18W1300 is a high-output bass for reflex and horn systems, not a long-throw subwoofer for small boxes. The low Le of 1.48 mH benefits transient behaviour in the upper bass.
Use and enclosure
The EBP of 100 sits right on the boundary, but bass reflex is still the obvious choice. The guideline from the TSP: around 209 l tuned to 40 Hz with a lower cut-off near 43 Hz. Sealed would be about 94 l with fc at 75 Hz, at the cost of noticeably less depth. With the enclosure calculator at 42.audio you can try smaller volumes with higher tuning if space is tight.
The 38 to 3300 Hz response allows use as the bass in a 2-way PA cabinet with a horn tweeter, provided the crossover sits well above the lower limit. At 211 mm mounting depth it fits shallow cabinets; the 13 kg weight is typical ferrite.
What to look out for
- 99.5 dB sensitivity – 850 W already gives high levels, more power gains little
- Xmax 8.5 mm: a high-pass below the tuning frequency prevents bottoming
- Vas 336 l demands a large cabinet, guideline 209 l vented
- 8 Ω, Re 5 Ω, Le 1.48 mH – easy to drive, fast transients
- Mounting depth 211 mm, weight 13 kg
Frequently asked questions
18W1300 or 18NLW4500 – what is the difference?
Both share fs 35 Hz and Qts 0.33, but the 18NLW4500 has a much smaller Vas of 151 l and a neodymium motor. The 18W1300 needs more volume but brings 99.5 dB efficiency.
Is the 18W1300 enough for a rental bass reflex sub?
For reflex subs tuned around 40 Hz, yes, provided the amplifier has a limiter. For deep bass below the tuning frequency, long-throw drivers with more Xmax are the better choice.
Which amplifier is recommended?
An amplifier around 850 W at 8 Ω. Because of the 99.5 dB sensitivity, headroom matters less than a good high-pass and a limiter that respects the 8.5 mm Xmax.

Enclosure suggestion
The EBP of 100 is in the intermediate range — either works; sealed plays tighter, bass reflex deeper and louder. EBP = fs / Qes = 35 / 0.35
Sealed (Qtc 0.707)
- Enclosure volume Vb
- 93.6 l
- System resonance Fc

Vb is the required net internal volume, Fb the tuning frequency of the reflex port and F3 the frequency at which the level has dropped by 3 dB. Calculated approximation after Small. A starting point for simulation, not a finished build plan.
