18Sound 8NTLS2000: 8" neodymium woofer with dual gap, Qts 0.19 and 350 W AES for hi-fi concepts
The 8NTLS2000 stands out in the 18Sound line-up: an 8" woofer with a dual-gap neodymium motor and two 2" voice coils that the manufacturer positions as a hi-fi driver. Its 40 to 1000 Hz operating range tells you what it is for: bass and lower midbass in a multi-way system, not midrange duty. Power handling 350 W AES, sensitivity 93.5 dB, weight just 1.5 kg.
The parameters are those of an extremely tightly driven unit: BL 17.2 Tm on 42 g of moving mass, Qes and Qts both 0.19, Qms 11.5 as a sign of low mechanical losses. Fs 41 Hz and Vas 27 l would be unremarkable for an 8" woofer, but combined with the low Qts they produce a driver that values control over volume. Xmax 7.4 mm and 227 cm² of cone area supply the displacement for the bass range.
Use and enclosure
At Qts 0.19 the classic approximation formulas yield very small volumes: bass-reflex guide value 3.4 l tuned to 77 Hz with an f3 around 109 Hz, sealed 2.1 l with fc near 153 Hz. That is the EBP of 216 expressed in numbers, and it shows this driver was not built for textbook passive reflex alignment. It gets interesting with active equalisation in a sealed box, in horn loading or as the bass driver of a DSP-controlled system, where the tight motor keeps excursion and transient behaviour under control. In the enclosure calculator at 42.audio, also simulate volumes larger than the guide values to judge the response with equalisation applied.
The upper crossover should sit well below 1000 Hz, with a midrange driver taking over above. Le of 0.69 mH is low for a dual-gap motor and keeps the impedance rise small in the crossover region.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω nominal, Re 5.4 Ω: amplifier with 350 W into 8 Ω, combine DSP equalisation with a high-pass filter.
- Qts 0.19: tight motor, classic reflex guide values come out very small.
- Mounting depth 121 mm at 1.5 kg: the neodymium dual gap allows lightweight cabinets.
- Xmax 7.4 mm: keep an eye on excursion when boosting the bass actively.
- Frequency range up to 1000 Hz: a pure bass and lower-midbass driver.
Frequently asked questions
Why are the enclosure guide values for the 8NTLS2000 so small?
The approximation formulas start from Qts, and 0.19 leads to tiny volumes with a high tuning frequency. In practice you exploit the tight motor with active equalisation in larger sealed boxes or in horn loading.
How does the 8NTLS2000 differ from the 8NTLW2000?
The 8NTLW2000 has Fs 71 Hz, Qts 0.21 and Vas 13 l, so it is a higher-tuned pro-audio woofer/midrange. The 8NTLS2000 sits much lower at Fs 41 Hz and Vas 27 l and is designed for bass up to 1000 Hz.
Does the 8NTLS2000 fit an active hi-fi system?
That is exactly where it is positioned: sealed box, DSP equalisation, crossover well below 1000 Hz to a midrange. With 93.5 dB and 350 W AES there is enough headroom for bass boost.
