18Sound AMT100H: compact AMT tweeter with 93 dB and 8 Ω for hi-fi and studio use
The 18Sound AMT100H is an air-motion transformer from the AMT series by Eighteen Sound, built as an 8 Ω tweeter with 93 dB sensitivity and 25 W AES power handling. Unlike a dome, an AMT does not push its pleated foil diaphragm back and forth; instead the pleats squeeze together and open up inside the magnetic field. Air is forced out of the folds at a much higher velocity than the foil itself moves. The result is very low moving mass, fast transient response and a radiating area that a dome of similar size cannot match.
Within the 18Sound AMT line the AMT100H is the compact unit: 0.85 kg, 65 mm mounting depth, 8 Ω. The manufacturer specifies a usable range from 800 Hz to 20,000 Hz and recommends a crossover point of 1,200 Hz. 18Sound applies what it calls NSD technology here. At 93 dB the sensitivity sits at the level of good hi-fi domes, which points the AMT100H towards living rooms, studio nearfield work and small active systems rather than high-output sound reinforcement.
Use and enclosure
The natural job for the AMT100H is the top band of a two-way or three-way system with mid-woofers or midranges around 93 dB sensitivity. Do not cross it below the recommended 1,200 Hz, and use a high-pass of at least 12 dB/oct.; 24 dB/oct. gives extra protection for the foil, because AMTs do not tolerate low-frequency content with large excursion. The 25 W AES rating is decent for a tweeter but applies strictly to filtered programme above the crossover.
On dispersion: the tall, narrow diaphragm of an AMT radiates wide horizontally and narrower vertically than a dome. Mount it upright and put the listening axis at ear height. The 65 mm depth fits almost any baffle; a chamfer or a shallow waveguide around the cut-out smooths the directivity match to the woofer. What to look out for
- 8 Ω impedance: easy on any amplifier, also in parallel with 8 Ω woofers in passive networks.
- 93 dB sensitivity: matches hi-fi woofers; pad it down against high-efficiency PA drivers.
- Crossover at 1,200 Hz or higher, high-pass slope at least 12 dB/oct.
- 65 mm mounting depth and 0.85 kg: shallow and light, fits slim cabinets.
- 25 W AES applies to filtered signal, not full-range operation.
Frequently asked questions
Which projects suit the AMT100H?
Two-way and three-way loudspeakers for hi-fi, home cinema and studio use that call for a tweeter with a large radiating area and a low take-over point. With an 800 Hz lower limit and a recommended crossover at 1,200 Hz it handles more of the midrange than a typical dome. For loud sound reinforcement the 93 dB sensitivity is too low.
Which amplifier goes with the AMT100H?
Any stable amplifier driving 8 Ω. In active systems a small channel is enough, since 25 W AES above 1,200 Hz is practically never used up. A clean, steep high-pass matters more than power.
How does the AMT100H differ from the large AMT in the same series?
The large model is much heavier, more sensitive and more powerful and targets horn and hybrid systems with high output demands. The AMT100H is the compact version at 0.85 kg and 65 mm depth for hi-fi and studio work. Both start at 800 Hz.
