18Sound HD1480T: 1.4" driver with 3" titanium diaphragm, 109 dB and crossover from 800 Hz
The 18Sound HD1480T brings a 3" voice coil with titanium diaphragm to a 1.4" horn interface. That is the combination you choose when the treble section has to reach well down: the frequency range starts at 500 Hz, the recommended crossover at 800 Hz. The driver thereby takes over a good part of the midrange that the woofer still has to play in smaller systems.
The key figures: 100 W AES power rating, 109 dB sensitivity, 8 Ω impedance, frequency range up to 20 kHz. The ferrite magnet driving a 3" coil is correspondingly massive, so the HD1480T weighs 5.3 kg at 75 mm mounting depth. Within the HD series it is the 1.4" model with the largest coil and the lowest usable limit.
Use and enclosure
A 1.4" driver with a 3" diaphragm is built for two-way systems with a 12" woofer where the transition sits between 800 Hz and about 1 kHz. The low crossover keeps the woofer out of the region where it starts to beam, and the 3" diaphragm has enough area to work there without excessive excursion. For horn systems in music reinforcement this is the classic layout.
The exit measures 35 mm and fits all 1.4" horns. At 42.audio the 18Sound options are several 1.4" horns with different coverage angles plus a 1.4" waveguide in the horns and waveguides category. With crossovers near 800 Hz the horn itself has to load low enough, so choose a large horn rather than a compact waveguide.
What to look out for
- 3" titanium diaphragm on a 1.4" interface: crossover from 800 Hz, range from 500 Hz
- 100 W AES and 109 dB, matches 12" woofers in two-way tops
- 5.3 kg due to the ferrite magnet, design cabinet and rigging accordingly
- Allow for 75 mm mounting depth behind the horn
- 8 Ω, 35 mm exit
Frequently asked questions
Which woofer do I combine with the HD1480T?
A 12" woofer in a two-way top, crossed between 800 Hz and 1 kHz. The low crossover is the reason to pick this driver instead of a smaller 1" model.
Which horn does the HD1480T need for 800 Hz?
A 1.4" horn that loads low enough. The large 1.4" horns from 18Sound are better suited than shallow waveguides.
What separates the HD1480T from its 2" sibling?
Both share the same 3" titanium diaphragm, 100 W AES and 109 dB. The difference is the horn interface: 1.4" on the HD1480T, 2" on the sibling. The choice depends on the horn you have.
