18Sound HD2080T: 2" driver with 3" titanium diaphragm, 100 W AES and 109 dB
The 18Sound HD2080T is the 2" version of the large ferrite driver in the HD series. A 3" voice coil with titanium diaphragm works into a 2" horn interface with a 51 mm exit. With 100 W AES, 109 dB sensitivity and 8 Ω it is designed for two-way systems that take over low in the midrange and still have to deliver high levels.
The lower end of the frequency range is 500 Hz, the recommended crossover 800 Hz, and it extends up to 20 kHz. That a driver with such a large diaphragm plays into the last octave is thanks to the titanium diaphragm, which stays stiff enough despite its area. The ferrite motor makes the HD2080T heavy at 5.2 kg; the 75 mm mounting depth, on the other hand, is moderate for a 2" driver.
Use and enclosure
If you have a 2" horn and want to cross low, the HD2080T is the matching driver. At 42.audio we carry an 18Sound 2" horn for this in the horns and waveguides category. For a crossover at 800 Hz the horn itself has to load low enough; a large horn is not an option here but a prerequisite.
The typical partner is a large woofer in a two-way top or a midrange horn in a three-way system. The high-pass should be steep and the 100 W AES protected by a limiter. At 109 dB sensitivity there is still plenty of headroom after the necessary level matching to the woofer.
What to look out for
- 3" titanium diaphragm on a 2" interface, 51 mm exit
- Crossover from 800 Hz, frequency range from 500 Hz
- 100 W AES and 109 dB at 8 Ω
- 5.2 kg weight: size the rear panel and horn mounting accordingly
- 75 mm mounting depth
Frequently asked questions
How low can I cross the HD2080T?
800 Hz with a steep filter is recommended. The frequency range starts at 500 Hz, but crossing that low only makes sense if the horn still loads there and levels stay moderate.
Which horn fits?
A 2" horn large enough for the intended crossover frequency. The 18Sound 2" horn is listed at 42.audio in the horns and waveguides category.
HD2080T or the smaller-throat sibling?
Identical diaphragm, identical power figures. The HD2080T has a 2" interface, the sibling a smaller one. Decide based on the horn you intend to use.
