18Sound HD3020T: 2" compression driver with 110 dB, 110 W AES and 3" titanium diaphragm
For 2" horns in loud two-way systems, Eighteen Sound offers the HD3020T. This ferrite driver from the HD series relies on a 3" voice coil with titanium diaphragm and reaches 110 dB sensitivity with a 110 W AES power rating. The impedance is 8 Ω, the frequency range 800 Hz to 20 kHz.
Compared with the sibling model, which also puts a 3" diaphragm on a 2" interface, the HD3020T is designed for efficiency and power handling rather than the lowest possible crossover. That shows in a shorter build: 68 mm mounting depth and 4.9 kg. The 50 mm exit corresponds to the 2" standard. A ferrite magnet in this class is thermally sluggish, which is an advantage in long sets at high level because the magnetic force does not drop with temperature.
Use and enclosure
The recommended crossover is 1.0 kHz and up with a steep filter. In a two-way top with a large woofer that is the usual transition region, and the 3" diaphragm still has plenty of area in reserve there. At 110 dB sensitivity you will normally have to attenuate the treble channel considerably to match the woofer, which means additional safety for the driver.
Any 2" model works as a horn. At 42.audio the 18Sound 2" horn is listed in the horns and waveguides category. For installations and rental boxes that regularly run at the upper end of their output, the HD3020T with 110 W AES is a sensible candidate.
What to look out for
- 110 dB sensitivity and 110 W AES at 8 Ω
- 3" titanium diaphragm on a 2" interface with 50 mm exit
- Crossover from 1.0 kHz with a steep high-pass
- 68 mm mounting depth, shorter than the lower-crossing sibling
- 4.9 kg weight due to the ferrite magnet
Frequently asked questions
HD3020T or the lower-crossing sibling for my 2" horn?
The sibling can be crossed lower; the HD3020T offers more efficiency and power handling in a shorter build. For a crossover around 1 kHz and high levels, the HD3020T is the better choice.
Which amplifier do I need?
Little power, lots of control. 110 dB and 8 Ω mean a small amplifier with a limiter at 110 W AES is enough. The danger is clipping, not too little power.
Can I use the HD3020T in a three-way system?
Yes, as a tweeter above a midrange horn or directly from 1.0 kHz above a large woofer. The 3" diaphragm handles both; what matters is a clean high-pass.
