18Sound ND1018BT: 1" neodymium driver with 1.75" titanium diaphragm, 108 dB and 1 kg
Neodymium instead of ferrite, and suddenly a driver with a 1.75" voice coil weighs just 1 kg: the 18Sound ND1018BT is a 1" compression driver from the ND series with titanium dome and neodymium magnet. It delivers 108 dB sensitivity, handles 50 W AES and has an 8 Ω impedance. The frequency range extends from 1.6 to 20 kHz.
Neodymium allows a much smaller and lighter motor for the same magnetic force. For the ND1018BT that means 50 mm mounting depth at a weight otherwise reached only by smaller ferrite drivers. The 1.75" diaphragm is large enough for a crossover from 1.6 kHz, and the titanium diaphragm provides the power handling that live use demands.
Use and enclosure
The ND1018BT is a driver for boxes where weight counts: rental tops, monitors, column systems and anything that gets carried regularly. The recommended crossover is 1.6 kHz and up with a steep high-pass. Combined with a 12" woofer this makes a compact two-way top with sufficient headroom, provided a limiter protects the 50 W AES.
The exit measures 25 mm and fits all 1" horns. At 42.audio the options are the 18Sound 1" horns and the 1" waveguide from the horns and waveguides category. Especially with a light aluminium horn you can build a very light treble section.
What to look out for
- Neodymium magnet: only 1 kg with a 1.75" voice coil
- 108 dB sensitivity, 50 W AES, 8 Ω
- Titanium diaphragm, frequency range 1.6 to 20 kHz
- 50 mm mounting depth, fits shallow cabinets
- 25 mm exit for 1" horns
Frequently asked questions
What does neodymium bring to the ND1018BT specifically?
Mainly weight and size: 1 kg and 50 mm mounting depth with a 1.75" coil. Sonically the magnet material is not decisive, but for portable boxes it makes the difference.
How low may I cross?
From 1.6 kHz with a steep filter. For high continuous levels go a bit higher; the titanium diaphragm then works with less excursion and the 50 W AES go further.
Difference to the ferrite counterpart in the HD series?
The ferrite counterpart has the same coil size and also titanium, but a ferrite magnet and therefore considerably more weight. The ND1018BT is the light variant for a comparable job.
