18Sound ND1030: lightweight 1" neodymium driver with 107 dB for compact two-way boxes

The 18Sound ND1030 is the compact entry point into the ND range of 1" compression drivers from Eighteen Sound. A neodymium magnet, a titanium dome and a 1.35" voice coil at 8 Ω add up to a high-frequency driver that weighs little, needs little mounting depth and still delivers 107 dB sensitivity on a horn. At 0.7 kg and 40 mm mounting depth it practically disappears behind the horn.

It is designed for two-way boxes in which a larger driver would simply be oversized: small full-range cabinets, nearfield monitors, columns and installation speakers. Within the 1" class, the deliberately small voice coil is the defining feature. It lowers the moving mass and lets the response run cleanly up to 20,000 Hz, but limits the thermal reserve to 30 W AES. That is no drawback as long as you use the driver for what it was built for.

Use and enclosure

The throat exit measures 25 mm, the classic 1" interface. The ND1030 therefore fits the 1" horns and waveguides from 18Sound that 42.audio lists in the Horns & Waveguides category, either as a constant-directivity horn for sound reinforcement or as a shallow waveguide for monitor and home projects.

The recommended crossover is 1.8 kHz, and that figure should be read as a lower limit. With 30 W AES it makes sense to place the transition to the midrange driver somewhat above this frequency and to use a steep filter. This protects the voice coil at high levels and keeps distortion in the lower part of the passband low. In active designs with DSP you can set crossover and limiter precisely; in passive designs, plan a high-pass with sufficient slope and a protection capacitor.

What to look out for

  • 8 Ω: runs on any PA or hi-fi amplifier; level matching to the woofer via L-pad or DSP.
  • 40 mm mounting depth and 0.7 kg: easy to fit in shallow cabinets and columns.
  • 1.35" voice coil: low moving mass, but only 30 W AES – keep the high-pass steep and not too low.
  • Neodymium magnet: high field strength at low mass, no heavy ferrite ring behind the horn.
  • Titanium dome: stiff diaphragm, response up to 20,000 Hz.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ND1030 enough for a small PA box with a 12" woofer?

Yes, provided the crossover sits at 1.8 kHz or above and the woofer plays cleanly up to that point. For higher continuous levels or lower crossover points, a driver with a larger voice coil is the better choice.

How much amplifier power does the driver need?

With 107 dB sensitivity, a small channel at 8 Ω is more than enough. More important than power is a clean high-pass filter, so that no low-frequency content reaches the 1.35" voice coil.

Which horn suits the ND1030?

Any 1" horn with a 25 mm throat. For sound reinforcement with defined coverage, a CD horn from 18Sound; for monitors or hi-fi, a waveguide. You will find the datasheet PDF and the values in the driver database on the product page at 42.audio.
