18SOUND XG14 Alu: 1.4" aluminium waveguide for line arrays with headroom
If you want to build a line array with more high-frequency output per module, there is no way around larger drivers. The 18SOUND XG14 Alu is the waveguide for that case: it accepts compression drivers with a 1.4" throat and shapes their output into a line source of the kind array modules need. It is made of aluminium and weighs 1 kg.
Eighteen Sound files the XG14 under line-array sources. The 1.4" interface brings two advantages over smaller formats: drivers with larger diaphragm and voice coil handle more power and can be crossed over lower. In an array that means fewer modules for the same level, or more headroom with the same number of modules. Aluminium keeps the exit slot dimensionally accurate; that is precisely where it is decided whether neighbouring modules couple cleanly into one continuous wavefront.
Use and enclosure
The XG14 Alu belongs in mid-sized line-array modules that have to carry music at serious level over longer distances: arrays for clubs, halls and open-air stages, but also high-output column loudspeakers. Suitable drivers are the 1.4" compression drivers from 18Sound at 42.audio; make sure throat diameter and bolt pattern match the waveguide and that all modules are fitted with identical drivers.
Set the crossover frequency based on the driver, in any case well above its resonance. Because 1.4" drivers can work lower than 1" models, the module's midrange can be relieved earlier; that improves vertical control in the transition region. During assembly the waveguides must sit on top of each other without seams, since any gap disturbs the coupling. The datasheet PDF and manufacturer page are stored on the product.
What to look out for
- 1.4" throat: combine exclusively with 1.4" compression drivers
- Aluminium, 1 kg: dimensionally accurate, designed for line operation
- Lower crossover possible than with 1" formats, the driver decides
- Stack modules without gaps, same drivers in all modules
Frequently asked questions
Why would I need a 1.4" waveguide instead of a 1" model?
For more level and a lower crossover per module. Larger drivers have more diaphragm area and power handling; an array reaches the same sound pressure with fewer modules or gains headroom.
Which drivers fit the XG14 Alu?
All 18Sound compression drivers with a 1.4" throat, in neodymium or ferrite versions. For arrays, light neodymium models are practical because weight adds up across many modules.
Can I use the XG14 Alu in a classic top cabinet?
It is not intended for that. The dispersion is vertically narrow and designed to couple with neighbouring modules; in a single cabinet a classic horn from the Horns & Waveguides category is the better fit.
18Sound XG14 Alu: manufacturer, spellings and classification
18Sound, 18 Sound and Eighteensound all refer to the same manufacturer: Eighteen Sound S.r.l. of Reggio Emilia, Italy. The XG14 Alu is a horn / waveguide from the XG series, available from 42.audio, 18Sound dealer in Germany, with datasheet and full specifications in the driver database.
At 42.audio you get the 18SOUND XG14 Alu with datasheet PDF, all key data in the driver database. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas 18Sound.
