18Sound XMT200: AMT horn with 90°x20° coverage for the AMT 200

The XMT200 is a horn that 18Sound built specifically for its AMT 200 air-motion transformer. It belongs to the XMT series and differs fundamentally from horns made for compression drivers: instead of a round throat, it accepts the slot-shaped exit of the AMT and guides it into a defined coverage pattern of 90° horizontal by 20° vertical.

An AMT works with a pleated foil diaphragm that squeezes air sideways out of its folds. Even without a horn, such a transducer radiates wide horizontally and fairly narrow vertically. The XMT200 reinforces exactly that trait: the 20° vertical window concentrates energy onto the audience plane and keeps ceiling and floor largely out of the picture. The mouth measures 167 mm (6.57") and the horn weighs 1.3 kg.

Use and enclosure

The typical application is a high-frequency module in which the AMT 200 works above a midrange or mid-woofer and the dispersion needs to stay under control. This makes particular sense in columns built from several modules, because the tight 20° vertical pattern eases the interaction between neighbouring units, and in longer-throw installations where a vertically narrow lobe reduces reflections from ceiling and floor. With 90° horizontal, a single cabinet covers the usual listening area of a room without exciting the side walls too early.

Crossover and equalisation follow the AMT 200, not the horn. What matters is that the horn changes the driver's frequency response: where the horn loads the diaphragm, output rises, and higher up the behaviour may shift. That is why the horn belongs on the measurement rig during crossover development. The datasheet is available as a PDF at 42.audio, and the driver database lets you compare it with other 18Sound high-frequency solutions.

What to look out for

  • Designed exclusively for the 18Sound AMT 200; no fitting for round compression-driver throats.
  • Coverage 90° horizontal by 20° vertical: strong vertical directivity.
  • Mouth 167 mm (6.57"), weight 1.3 kg; size the baffle and mounting accordingly.
  • The 90° axis must be horizontal, otherwise the listening zone becomes unusably narrow.

Frequently asked questions

Does the XMT200 fit other AMTs or compression drivers?

No. The horn is matched to the exit geometry of the AMT 200 and has no round throat. For compression drivers, 42.audio carries the matching models in the 18Sound Horns & Waveguides category.

Why is a vertical coverage of only 20° useful?

In sound reinforcement the audience sits on a relatively flat plane; energy radiated above or below it only creates reflections and degrades speech intelligibility. A vertically narrow horn concentrates output where it is needed and makes stacking several modules easier.

What amplifier do I need for this combination?

The horn itself is passive; impedance and power handling are set by the AMT 200. A horn raises efficiency in the controlled band, so the same loudness needs less power than with the free-radiating driver.
