18Sound XO 10 NCX 750: passive crossover for the 10NCX750 coaxial driver
The 18Sound XO 10 NCX 750 is the passive two-way crossover that 18Sound developed for its 10" coaxial driver 10NCX750. A coax combines a bass cone and a compression driver on one axis; the crossover splits the signal between the two sections so the coax can run on a single amplifier channel – no DSP, no bi-amping.
The 10NCX750 itself brings a neodymium motor, a 3" voice coil in the bass section, 350 W AES, 97.5 dB sensitivity and an 80° coverage angle; the high-frequency section uses a titanium diaphragm. The recommended crossover point is 1.2 kHz, and the XO 10 NCX 750 is tuned precisely to that point and to the impedance curves of both sections. Designing your own network requires measurements of the coax in the finished cabinet; the factory crossover skips that step and delivers a result that matches the driver.
Use and enclosure
Typical applications are stage monitors, compact full-range tops and installation loudspeakers in which the 10NCX750, with its bass section covering 60 to 1,500 Hz and the high-frequency section above, works as a complete two-way system. You place the crossover between the connector panel and the two terminal pairs of the coax; the system impedance stays at 8 Ω, so one amplifier channel rated for 8 Ω is enough. Power handling is set by the driver – 350 W AES is the ceiling defined by the bass section.
You design the enclosure for the coax, not for the crossover: Fs 64 Hz, Qts 0.25, Vas 23 l and 5.5 mm Xmax describe a tightly driven woofer with 20 Tm of motor force. For volume and tuning use the enclosure calculator at 42.audio; the datasheet PDF is available on the product page.
What to look out for
- Only matches the 18Sound 10NCX750 – with other coaxial drivers the crossover point and impedance do not fit
- Crossover at 1.2 kHz, system impedance 8 Ω – one amplifier channel is enough
- Power handling is limited by the driver: 350 W AES
- Cabinet installation: allow room for the board and short cable runs to the coax
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the XO 10 NCX 750 with a different coax?
Not sensibly. The crossover is tuned to the impedance curves and the 1.2 kHz crossover point of the 10NCX750. A different driver has different resonances and level relationships, which leads to dips or peaks in the transition.
Do I still need a DSP?
No, that is the purpose of the passive crossover: the coax runs on one amplifier channel. A DSP or equaliser can additionally correct cabinet effects, but is not required for operation.
What does the amplifier have to deliver?
One channel rated for 8 Ω; the 10NCX750 has 97.5 dB sensitivity and 350 W AES. Choose the power so you have headroom in normal use without constantly pushing the driver's ceiling.
