18Sound XO 12 NCX 910: crossover for the 12NCX910 with 99.5 dB and 450 W AES
If you want to run the 12NCX910 passively, this crossover is the obvious route. 18Sound tuned the XO 12 NCX 910 for exactly this 12" coaxial, which at 99.5 dB sensitivity and 450 W AES delivers noticeably more output than many other coaxials of this size. Its HF section with titanium diaphragm and 80° dispersion needs a different attenuation and a different filter point than the less powerful 12" model of the NCX range, which is why the two crossovers cannot be swapped.
The key data of the driver the circuit is built around: neodymium motor, 3" voice coil, 8 Ω, a usable range of 60 Hz to 4,000 Hz and a recommended crossover point at 1.5 kHz. With Fs 57 Hz, Qts 0.3, Vas 58 l and Xmax 6.9 mm the LF section also offers more excursion, so the coaxial is meant as a complete two-way loudspeaker rather than just a mid-high solution.
Use and enclosure
Typical applications are high-output stage monitors, full-range tops for small sound reinforcement jobs and installation loudspeakers where a single amplifier channel per cabinet is the goal. The crossover splits between cone and compression driver, pads the HF level down to that of the LF section and makes sure both sections work together cleanly through the transition region. With the crossover around 1.5 kHz the compression driver stays well above its lower operating limit, which matters for HF power handling at high levels.
Design the enclosure from the Thiele-Small parameters of the 12NCX910, the enclosure calculator at 42.audio does the maths for you. Keep the mounting depth of 210 mm and the weight of 6 kg in mind, a wedge cabinet with a shallow angle needs enough depth for it. Mount the crossover board on the inside of the cabinet, spaced away from the magnet, so inductors and motor do not interact.
What to look out for
- Tuned specifically for the 12NCX910, not interchangeable with the crossover of the smaller sibling model.
- 8 Ω at the amplifier output, size the amplifier for 450 W AES per cabinet.
- The coaxial needs 210 mm mounting depth and weighs 6 kg, plan cabinet and handles accordingly.
- Mount the crossover inductors away from the neodymium magnet.
- Crossover around 1.5 kHz: the titanium HF unit works above its critical region.
Frequently asked questions
How does this crossover differ from the one for the less powerful 12" coaxial of the series?
In being tuned for a different driver. The 12NCX910 is louder at 99.5 dB and is crossed at 1.5 kHz, so filter point and attenuation are laid out differently. On the wrong driver the balance between cone and HF section will be off.
Is one amplifier channel enough for a cabinet with 12NCX910 and crossover?
Yes, that is the point of the passive approach. One channel at 8 Ω with power in the region of the driver's 450 W AES, ideally with a limiter. For two cabinets you need a stereo amplifier accordingly.
Can I connect a subwoofer through this crossover?
The crossover only splits between cone and compression driver inside the coaxial. A subwoofer is added upstream via an active controller or DSP that sends the signal below the 60 Hz lower limit of the coaxial to the bass cabinet.
