18Sound XO 15 NCX 910: crossover for the 15NCX910 with 450 W AES
The 15NCX910 is the strongest 15" coaxial in this group: 450 W AES, 99.5 dB sensitivity, BL 21 Tm and 7 mm Xmax. Running a driver like that passively calls for a crossover that correctly compensates the large level difference between cone and compression driver and does not fold under high power. The XO 15 NCX 910 is the network 18Sound provides for the job, tuned to the recommended 1.2 kHz crossover point.
With 8 Ω, neodymium motor and 3" voice coil the driver belongs to the NCX family, but with 50 Hz to 4,000 Hz it covers the lowest range of the coaxials presented here. The HF section radiates over 80°. Vas 107 l together with 7 mm Xmax and BL 21 Tm point to a comparatively stiff, hard-driven system that works in more compact enclosures than softer 15" drivers.
Use and enclosure
The main applications are full-range cabinets with high output demands and large stage monitors run passively from one amplifier channel. The crossover splits between LF cone and compression driver, aligns the levels and secures the transition so that the HF unit is not loaded with signal below its working range. The crossover around 1.2 kHz means the 15" cone does not have to carry the midrange too far up, which benefits dispersion through the transition region.
The enclosure follows from Fs 55 Hz, Qts 0.33, Vas 107 l and Xmax 7 mm, calculated with the enclosure tool at 42.audio. Account for the 205 mm mounting depth and 6.5 kg weight in the design, especially in wedge cabinets with a shallow angle. For the crossover board: bolt it down securely, keep inductors away from the magnet and the cabinet walls, and match the cable gauge to the power.
What to look out for
- Designed for the 15NCX910, not for the less powerful 15" sibling (different sensitivity, different tuning).
- 8 Ω, one amplifier channel per cabinet, power around 450 W AES.
- Xmax 7 mm and BL 21 Tm: the driver takes high levels, a limiter is still worthwhile.
- 205 mm mounting depth, 6.5 kg weight.
- Match cables and connectors to the power handling, do not treat the crossover as a protection circuit.
Frequently asked questions
Why are there two different crossovers for the two 15" coaxials of the NCX series?
Because the two coaxials have different sensitivities and motors. The 15NCX910 sits at 99.5 dB, its sibling below that, so the HF branch needs a different amount of attenuation. A shared crossover would give one of them too much or too little treble.
Does the crossover fit into an active concept with a subwoofer?
Yes, the crossover only works inside the coaxial between cone and HF unit. The split to the subwoofer is handled by a DSP or controller ahead of the amplifier. The top then runs passively while the bass sits on its own channel.
Which amplifier is recommended?
An amplifier with around 450 W at 8 Ω per channel, ideally with some headroom for transient peaks. At 99.5 dB sensitivity the coaxial needs only a fraction of that for normal levels, the headroom prevents clipping.
