18Sound XR1464C: 1.4" horn with 60°x40° for medium and long throw
With a 1.4" throat (35 mm), the XR1464C serves the class of larger compression drivers that can be crossed over lower than 1" models. It comes from 18Sound's XR range, covers 60° horizontal by 40° vertical and weighs 1.4 kg.
Why 1.4" at all? A larger throat allows larger diaphragms in the driver, meaning more radiating area, higher power handling and a lower crossover frequency. The price is usually an earlier roll-off at the very top of the treble, because the larger diaphragm is heavier. In two-way systems where the compression driver is expected to take over in the upper midrange, that is the usual and sensible trade-off. The narrow 60°x40° pattern focuses what the driver delivers onto a sector and brings correspondingly more level on axis.
Use and enclosure
The horn suits tops for medium and longer distances where speech and music need to be aimed at the audience: stage systems with some distance to the front row, halls, outdoor areas. Combined with a larger mid-woofer, it forms a high-efficiency two-way top whose high-frequency section stays comfortable even with a low crossover. Frequently asked questions
How does the XR1464C differ from a 1" horn with the same coverage?
The larger throat takes drivers with more diaphragm area and higher power handling that can be crossed over lower. In return, output at the very top of the treble usually rolls off a little earlier than with a 1" system.
Can I mount the horn sideways to get 40°x60°?
Whether that works mechanically depends on the flange and the mounting points; the drawing in the datasheet PDF answers that. Acoustically, rotated mounting works as long as the coverage in the room is planned accordingly.
What is the difference to the XT1464?
Both have a 1.4" throat and 60° horizontal; the XT1464 opens vertically wider than the 40° of the XR1464C and belongs to the XT series. The XR1464C is the tighter variant for longer throw.
