18Sound XR1496C: 1.4" horn with 90°x60° for wide listening areas
Wide coverage and a large throat in one horn: the XR1496C from 18Sound opens 90° horizontal by 60° vertical and accepts compression drivers with a 1.4" exit (35 mm). It belongs to the XR series, weighs 1.4 kg and is the wide-dispersion counterpart to the narrower horns of the same range.
90°x60° is the classic pattern for a top cabinet that stands close to the audience and needs to cover a room evenly across its width. Pairing it with a 1.4" throat is not a given: large drivers are often mated to narrow horns because they are intended for long throw. The XR1496C targets designs that want the higher power handling and lower crossover option of a 1.4" driver without giving up a wide listening zone, such as powerful two-way tops for clubs, short-distance stages or installations where a few cabinets have to cover a broad area.
Use and enclosure
In a two-way top with a larger mid-woofer, the XR1496C with a matching driver handles everything from the upper midrange upwards. The 60° vertical window is generous enough to reach standing audiences at varying distances without steep tilting of the cabinet. In rooms with reflective side walls, keep the 90° horizontal pattern in mind when placing the cabinets so the walls are not excited too strongly.
Matching drivers are the 1.4" compression drivers from 18Sound in the 42.audio range, with titanium, aluminium, glass or NSD diaphragms and neodymium or ferrite magnets. The crossover may sit lower than in 1" systems but must stay well above the lower limit below which the horn no longer controls the pattern; that limit is given in the datasheet PDF. The driver database at 42.audio helps you match driver and mid-woofer.
What to look out for
- Throat 1.4" (35 mm): for 18Sound 1.4" compression drivers, check the mounting type.
- Coverage 90°x60°: wide near-field coverage, less suited to long throw.
- Weight 1.4 kg, so plan a correspondingly sturdy front mounting.
- Low crossover only with a steep filter slope and within the horn's usable range.
Frequently asked questions
What cabinet size is the XR1496C intended for?
Two-way tops with a larger mid-woofer where the high-frequency section must deliver serious level yet still radiate wide. The baffle has to accommodate the horn and its 1.4 kg next to the mid-woofer.
Why a 1.4" horn with wide coverage instead of a 1" model?
The larger throat allows drivers with more diaphragm area that can be crossed over lower and take more power. That relieves the mid-woofer of the upper mids, which sounds cleaner at high levels.
Which crossover is recommended?
Active with DSP or passive, in both cases with a steep slope and a crossover point well above the horn's lower limit. The horn's level advantage is then matched to the mid-woofer with an attenuator or in the DSP.
