18Sound XR2064C: 2" horn with 60°x40° for large compression drivers
The XR2064C is the 2" model of 18Sound's XR series: a horn with a 50 mm (1.97") throat, 60° horizontal by 40° vertical coverage and a weight of 1.6 kg. It is meant for compression drivers with a 2" exit, the class that offers the lowest crossover and highest power handling in professional sound reinforcement.
Compared with smaller models, a 2" driver has a considerably larger diaphragm and usually a large voice coil. That brings more radiating area, more thermal headroom and the option of taking over lower in the midrange. A horn for this throat has to be correspondingly large so it actually loads and controls the pattern in the band the driver is supposed to cover. The tight 60°x40° of the XR2064C turns the high output of such a driver into reach.
Use and enclosure
Classic fields of use are tops for large stages and halls, outdoor systems and setups where a few cabinets have to throw far. In a two-way top with a big mid-woofer, the 2" section can take over lower than a 1" system, which relieves the mids; in three-way systems the combination covers mid-high above a dedicated midrange or bass section. The 40° vertical pattern calls for deliberate tilting of the cabinet towards the audience.
Matching drivers are the 2" compression drivers from 18Sound at 42.audio, with titanium, aluminium, glass or NSD diaphragms, mostly with neodymium and some with ferrite magnets. The crossover should sit well above the lower limit of horn and driver, which is stated in the datasheet PDF. Because 2" drivers roll off earlier at the very top than small models, a boost in the DSP or a suitable passive equalisation belongs in the plan. The driver database at 42.audio supports matching with the mid-woofer.
What to look out for
- Throat 2" (50 mm, 1.97"): exclusively for 2" compression drivers, check the mounting type.
- Coverage 60°x40°: for long throw, not for small rooms.
- Weight 1.6 kg plus driver: size the baffle and fixings generously.
- Plan for high-frequency equalisation, as large drivers roll off earlier at the top.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 2" system worth it compared with smaller throats?
If high levels with a low crossover are required and the cabinet is going to be large anyway, yes. For compact tops or short distances, a 1" system or an intermediate format is usually the more practical choice.
Which 18Sound drivers fit the XR2064C?
All 2" compression drivers from the 42.audio range. Diaphragm material and magnet determine character and weight; the mounting type has to match the horn flange.
How should the crossover be designed?
With a steep slope and a crossover frequency well above the horn's lower limit. The level advantage of the horn system is matched to the bass section by attenuation or DSP, and the top-end roll-off of the large driver is equalised.
