18Sound XT120: 1" horn with 90°x60° for compact two-way cabinets
If you are looking for a 1" horn with the classic 90°x60° pattern, 18Sound's XT series leads you to the XT120. The throat takes compression drivers with a 1" exit (25 mm); the coverage of 90° horizontal by 60° vertical is the standard for tops that stand in front of an audience and need to fill a room evenly across its width.
Such a horn has two jobs: it couples the driver's small diaphragm to the air and thereby raises efficiency in the controlled band, and it defines the solid angle into which the energy goes. A horn with even dispersion across frequency ensures that listeners off axis get the same tonal balance as those on axis; only the level drops. That also simplifies crossover design, because the horn behaves like a predictable level control rather than a filter that sounds different at every angle.
Use and enclosure
The XT120 is the obvious choice for compact two-way loudspeakers with a small to medium mid-woofer: portable PA cabinets, installation speakers for bars and halls, stage monitors and DIY projects that want a horn tweeter instead of a dome. The 60° vertical window leaves enough margin to reach seated and standing listeners from a normal mounting height.
Suitable drivers are the 1" compression drivers from 18Sound carried by 42.audio, with ferrite or neodymium magnets and diaphragms of titanium, polyethylene or NSD material. For the crossover: stay well above the horn's lower limit stated in the datasheet PDF and use a steep slope, because a 1" driver quickly reaches its mechanical limits below its working range. The level advantage of the horn system over the mid-woofer is compensated passively with an attenuator or actively in the DSP. The driver database at 42.audio helps you put driver and mid-woofer together.
What to look out for
- Throat 1" (25 mm): exclusively for 1" compression drivers, mind the driver's mounting type.
- Coverage 90°x60°: wide, even coverage at short and medium range.
- Set the crossover high enough and steep so the driver stays protected.
- Compensate the level difference to the mid-woofer in the crossover or DSP.
Frequently asked questions
Which rooms suit 90°x60°?
Most clubs, halls and rehearsal rooms where the cabinet stands at normal height in front of the audience. For long distances or very reverberant rooms, narrower horns from the same 18Sound category make more sense.
Which 18Sound 1" drivers fit the XT120?
All 1" compression drivers from the 42.audio range; they differ in magnet material, diaphragm and power handling. The only requirement is that the driver's mounting type matches the horn.
How low can I cross over with the XT120?
No lower than the horn's lower limit in the datasheet PDF and the recommendation of the chosen driver allow, and with a clear margin above them. The lower the crossover, the steeper the filter should be.
At 42.audio you get the 18SOUND XT120 with datasheet PDF, all key data in the driver database. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas 18Sound.
