18Sound XT1464: 1.4" horn with 60°x50° for directed tops
60° horizontal, 50° vertical, throat for 1.4" compression drivers: the XT1464 from 18Sound's XT series is a horn for tops that should radiate in a directed way without becoming as vertically tight as dedicated long-throw horns. The throat measures 35 mm (1.4") and the horn weighs 1.4 kg.
The combination of a narrow horizontal and a medium vertical angle is often more practical in daily use than a strictly symmetrical pattern: horizontally the sound is focused onto the audience and the side walls are spared, vertically there is enough margin so the cabinet does not have to be aimed to the degree and nearby listeners are still covered. The 1.4" throat allows drivers with more diaphragm area than 1" models, meaning more power handling and a lower crossover, as desired in a two-way top with a larger mid-woofer.
Use and enclosure
The XT1464 makes sense in tops for medium distances: stages with some space to the front row, multi-purpose halls, outdoor systems with several cabinets side by side. With cabinets placed next to each other, the 60° horizontal pattern limits the overlap zone, which reduces interference in the transition area. As the tighter counterpart with the same throat and the same width, 42.audio carries the XR1464C, whose vertical opening is narrower.
On the driver side, the 1.4" compression drivers from 18Sound in the 42.audio range fit, optionally with titanium, aluminium, glass or NSD diaphragms and with neodymium or ferrite magnets. The crossover frequency may sit lower than in a 1" system but should stay with a margin above the lower limit that the datasheet PDF states for the horn. A steep filter and, with large drivers, a slight lift at the very top belong to the voicing. The driver database at 42.audio makes matching with the mid-woofer easier.
What to look out for
- Throat 1.4" (35 mm): for 1.4" compression drivers, check the mounting type.
- Coverage 60°x50°: focused horizontally, with vertical margin for nearby listeners.
- Weight 1.4 kg; plan a sturdy baffle and mounting.
- A lower crossover than with 1" horns is possible, only with a steep slope.
Frequently asked questions
How does the XT1464 differ from the XR1464C?
Both are 1.4" horns with 60° horizontal from 18Sound. The XT1464 opens vertically to 50° and is thus the more forgiving variant for medium distances; the XR1464C focuses tighter vertically and throws further.
Which drivers fit the XT1464?
All 1.4" compression drivers from 18Sound at 42.audio. Diaphragm material and magnet define character, weight and power handling; what matters is that the mounting type matches the horn flange.
Can I use the horn in a three-way system?
Yes, there the combination of horn and 1.4" driver covers the range above a dedicated midrange section. The lower crossover then sits comfortably within the horn's usable range.
18Sound XT1464: manufacturer, spellings and classification
18Sound, 18 Sound and Eighteensound all refer to the same manufacturer: Eighteen Sound S.r.l. of Reggio Emilia, Italy. The XT1464 is a 1.4-inch horn / waveguide from the XT series, available from 42.audio, 18Sound dealer in Germany, with datasheet and full specifications in the driver database.
At 42.audio you get the 18SOUND XT1464 with datasheet PDF, all key data in the driver database. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas 18Sound.
