Beyma 10MC500: 10" midrange with 500 W AES, 97 dB and 2.5" voice coil

The Beyma 10MC500 from the MC series is a 10" midrange for hard use: 500 W AES power handling through a 2.5" voice coil, 97 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω, working range 70 Hz to 5,000 Hz. At 5.7 kg it is the heavy model of the range; the Nd variant, the 10MC500Nd, is also in our shop.

The Thiele-Small parameters show a driver for small volumes: Fs 65 Hz, Qts 0.29, Qms 8, Vas 24 l, Xmax 5.5 mm, BL 16.8 Tm at 67 g moving mass. The high Qms points to low mechanical losses in the suspension, the low Qes of 0.35 to a strong motor. The mounting depth of 155 mm has to be allowed for in the cabinet.

Use and enclosure

Vented guideline: about 10 l, tuned to 83 Hz, lower cutoff around 96 Hz. A 10" driver in 10 l is a statement: this is a driver for compact, loud tops that run with subwoofers. In a 3-way system you use it as the midrange in a sealed chamber of about 4.9 l with an in-box resonance around 158 Hz; the EBP of 186 shows that low-end extension in a sealed box is not to be expected. Going up, the range ends at 5,000 Hz, so the handover to the compression driver sensibly sits below that. A Beyma driver on a horn from the horns and waveguides category fits. Cross the low end with clear margin above 70 Hz, and in vented operation add a high-pass below the tuning frequency.

Frequently asked questions

10MC500 or 10MC500Nd?

The Nd variant has a slightly different parameter set at Fs 58 Hz, Qts 0.24 and Vas 29 l and targets weight-critical applications. The 10MC500 at 5.7 kg is the choice for fixed installation and ground-stacked use where weight does not matter.

Which amplifier for 500 W AES?

A power amplifier with around 500 W into 8 Ω per channel and an active limiter makes full use of the driver. Because sensitivity is high at 97 dB, you reach very high levels with less power; what matters is the high-pass against over-excursion.

Does the 10MC500 work in a 2-way top without a subwoofer?

Only with limitations. The lower cutoff in the vented guideline sits around 96 Hz, and little happens below that. That is enough for speech; for music a subwoofer belongs in the system.
