Beyma 10MCB700: 10" midrange with ferrite motor, 700 W AES and 96 dB

With the 10MCB700 Beyma offers a 10" midrange from the MCB series that combines 700 W AES power handling with a conventional ferrite motor. The result weighs 7.6 kg and needs 160 mm of mounting depth, but in return you get a 3" voice coil with corresponding thermal headroom and a motor strength of 18.5 Tm without paying for neodymium.

The design is clearly trimmed for midrange work: resonance sits at 75 Hz, Vas is only 13.2 l, and the moving mass of 91 g together with 5.8 mm Xmax is aimed at level stability rather than bass extension. Qts 0.33 makes the driver forgiving in small volumes, and Qms 7.8 indicates low mechanical losses in the suspension. The sensitivity of 96 dB is enough to keep up with bass and horn in a 3-way system.

Use and enclosure

The 80 to 4,000 Hz working range covers exactly the band an 18" woofer no longer handles cleanly at the top and a 1.4" or 2" compression driver should not be asked to cover at the bottom. As a guideline for the closed midrange compartment, the Thiele-Small parameters give 3.7 l with an in-box resonance of 161 Hz. Set the lower crossover well above the 80 Hz limit, sensibly above the box resonance so the cone does not operate in its resonance region.

The EBP of 250 shows that a vented box makes little real sense for this driver; the calculated guideline of 8.2 l tuned to 85 Hz describes a kick module rather than a bass channel. Stay with the closed compartment and leave the low end to the woofer. The details can be worked out with the enclosure calculator on 42.audio.

What to look out for

  • Ferrite magnet, 7.6 kg: plan for a rigid enclosure and solid fixings.
  • Mounting depth 160 mm plus clearance for magnet cooling in the closed compartment.
  • 3" voice coil, 700 W AES: high continuous load, Re 5.8 Ω at 8 Ω nominal.
  • Le 0.9 mH: moderate impedance rise, account for it in passive crossovers.
  • Xmax 5.8 mm: sufficient for midrange, not intended for vented low end.

Frequently asked questions

10MCB700 or 10MC500: which fits better?

The 10MC500 has a softer suspension with 65 Hz resonance, Qts 0.29 and 24 l Vas, giving slightly more extension, but 500 W AES power handling. The 10MCB700 trades that for 700 W AES and a more compact alignment with 13.2 l Vas, ideal for very small midrange compartments.

What amplifier does the 10MCB700 need?

A PA amplifier delivering roughly the 700 W AES rating into 8 Ω is adequate. More important than raw power is a high-pass filter below the crossover so the 5.8 mm of excursion is not consumed by low-frequency content.

Can I cross it to a horn at 2 kHz?

Yes, 2 kHz sits comfortably within the range up to 4,000 Hz. For even directivity, a crossover in that region to a 1.4" or 2" compression driver on a horn is a typical choice.

At 42.audio you get the BEYMA 10MCB700 with all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas Beyma.
