Beyma 15LEX1600Nd: 15" neodymium subwoofer with 1,600 W AES at 8.8 kg

The Beyma 15LEX1600Nd combines the high power handling of the LEX 1600 class with a neodymium motor: 1,600 W AES on a 4" voice coil, 96 dB sensitivity, 8 Ω – all at 8.8 kg. It is the driver for subwoofers and bass cabinets that get carried, flown or moved in touring enclosures, where the ferrite sibling would simply be too heavy. The working range from 40 to 1,500 Hz additionally allows use as the woofer in 2-way systems with a low crossover.

In terms of parameters it brings Fs 41 Hz, Qts 0.36 and, at 91 l, the smallest Vas among the 15" LEX models – the suspension is stiffer, so the driver gets by with less box. The EBP of 102 sits just above the border beyond which vented is the better choice. A BL of 20 Tm moves a mass of 106 g, Xmax is 7 mm and displacement 616 cm³. As with the ferrite counterpart: the thermal headroom is the asset, the stroke is conventional.

Use and enclosure

From the Thiele-Small parameters a vented guide value of 73 l follows, tuned to 43 Hz, with f3 at 45 Hz. For a tour-ready 15" sub that is an easily manageable volume with useful extension. Sealed it would be 32 l at fc 81 Hz – usable as a pure bass section in a larger system or with DSP equalisation, but too little for a stand-alone sub. Run both variants cleanly through the enclosure calculator on 42.audio, including the port cross-section for 1,600 W.

Place the crossover to the top well below the upper limit of 1,500 Hz, in the usual sub/top region. With Le 1.2 mH the driver stays controlled in the upper bass. Since 1,600 W of amplifier power quickly exceeds the 7 mm Xmax below the tuning frequency, a high-pass and a limiter are mandatory in the signal chain.

What to look out for

  • 8.8 kg with neodymium – the 15" 1,600 W bass for touring and flown bass cabinets.
  • Mounting depth 181 mm: standard for 15" sub cabinets, keep the port clear of the magnet.

How does the 15LEX1600Nd differ from the 15LEX1000Nd?

Both share Fs 41 Hz and a Qts around 0.36 to 0.37. The 15LEX1600Nd has the 4" coil with 1,600 W AES and, at 91 l, a smaller Vas than the 15LEX1000Nd at 113 l, so it needs less box while handling more power. If you never push 1,600 W, the lighter 15LEX1000Nd is the more economical choice.

Which amplifier is recommended for the 15LEX1600Nd?

A channel with up to 1,600 W into 8 Ω exploits the thermal headroom. What matters is a high-pass below the tuning and a limiter, because mechanically the 7 mm Xmax limits long before the voice coil does.

How does it compare with the 18 Sound 15ND840?
